When you will be earning 20-30k /month with 6 years experience then you will understand why Mechanical Engineers are going for Data Science. Data Science is one of the few career options for experienced core branchers where they can pursue

Data Science is a very broad stream which is a mixture of statistics, math, coding, big data, machine learning, deep leaning, natural language processing, forecasting along with understanding of the core business and its strategy of decision making for business growth. It really takes a long time to learn, practice and build a portfolio. This is a new hybrid version of study.

It's very hard for students in India to get admitted into streams they want. I was good at coding in school. Now I am studying Mechanical in an NIT becoz i got less marks in chemistry whereas my friend who was very good in chemistry is studying CSE with no coding background. Now tell me, why chemistry marks is needed for getting into CSE?

In India passion is secondary because of the crunch job situation.

Well People don't really know what hurdles do data scientists face at industry. It's lot more than just running a piece of python code which people don't even know what's going on in the background. It takes years of dedication and hard work to excel in the field of data science. And again do not misunderstand me and get offended. Do what you love.

You can be a mechanical engineer and become a data scientist. The passion needs to be there.

I have one question regarding this. If a student who is an average is his/her field which is not very lucrative in terms of jobs ( hardly any jobs ) lets say for example pure science fields or may be history. These people have to get jobs and because their field is not providing with this thing, I have seen many people transitioning into data science just for getting job or may be better salary just like an MBA degree. No offense but you have said that be top most in your field, what if someone tried but is just average in his/her field and couldn't find a job. I think transitioning into these fields is only option for them. It's not just the passion which is only driving thing needed.

The truth is being spoken. I've seen a lot of people opting out for Data Science just because of the herd mentality. I would advise the wanna-be Data Scientists to first try out some courses of Data Science from the online sources, learn the tools used and talk to people who have experience in that field to know whether it suits you or not, then decide whether you would want to invest so much on this profile or not. Lastly, All the Best and keep learning. Thank you Yash for making this video! Kudos!❤

As much as I want to explore more career options, but some people just can't. Some people just don't get the financial and emotional support from the family. It's not like the US. You can't just leave and do whatever you want to do and there are many reasons for that like shit minimum wages, competition etc. So people are being practical and hence they choose the field that on average pays well and is well respected. This is the reality my friend. Curse to be born in a lower middle class family....

No matter what we want...once we get it we want something else...

And what is the guarantee that one will never get bored with the things he is passionate about right now...its human nature to always complain

I yearned for someone to speak on this bandwagon. Thank you Yash.

I did my bachelor's degree in History, Political Science, and Geography. Did master's in Forestry Management. It may look like I don't know anything about computers and coding. But since my childhood I am using computers, I know them inside out, I have learnt c++, python, R, SQL just because of my interest in computers. I feel comfortable around it. I am also at Pro Hacker Rank in HTB. I also have a good knowledge of statistics and have used SPSS for many assignments.

I wanted to become a computer engineer, but couldn't clear the entrance exam 2 times.
I wanted to get a job in Data field but couldn't get it.

Now I'm a government employee, where all my skills are useless. Now my main skill is to have tea 5 times a day. 😢

The "follow your passion" argument is kinda really outdated now .

Data science doesn't have a specific bachelors so most of the students come from various majors

True you can excel at data science even if you are newbie to coding but you can't manage data science if you don't like math and statistics.

No study is a easy study
we can't tell that we like or dislike something even before we try it.

Just showing that "oh there is a herd, I don't wanna be a part of herd, I'll walk my own path" will be cool but again if you look closely the herd has more chances of walking in a right path.

Just don't dismiss anything out of fear for future and don't pursue anything out of greed for future. Make quick decisions don't hold yourself back

Any person with true interest/passion can pursue Data science, try out some courses do some projects, jump on the wagon only if you enjoy because growth is certain. It has application everywhere, you just need to think ..
For candidates in core domain(Mech, Civil), while you may have interest in your traditional fields also think if you have good growth to sustain for next 10years?
If not there is no harm in up-skilling yourself to new skills or change domains even when you are in your late 30s.
There is no age limit on learning :)

Dont generalize.
You might have a perspective of the people who are already successfully working in the data science field but what you don't have is a perspective of the people that are trying to make a transition into this field with a different background.
Every individual person is different and follows a different process of thinking and has various variables in their life to influence decision making all of which cannot be generalized.
Some people are grateful to just have a decent standard of living and hard work will get you there with or without passion.
I agree in that this is not the sure shot path to happiness but hey that's the cost you have to pay for the comfort of not having to worry about bills and an empty bank account.

Me personally I'd rather drive a BMW and vacation in the Maldives than be the most "happiest/passionate" (enter stupid job profile that pays peanuts and has no scope).
No offense!
Cheers!

It doesn't matter which ever degree you have... mistakes happen...and you have opportunity to correct it...everyday is a new opportunity and the best time to start working on it is today...think of each and every situation twice you will be after you choose the stream you want to study...have dedication and patience...and you will be successful in it... Cheers!!!

Actually, a lot of higher education in electrical engineering overlaps with computer science/math. Data science is quite related in that regard.
