Byakuya's speech on bonds being like a pointillist painting is kind of like his promises to his parents and to Hisana. He focused so much on his past bonds with Hisana and his parents that Rukia thought he was a cold, uncaring brother. When Byakuya stepped back from his past bonds with Hisana and his parents by breaking his promises he made to them, he was able to focus on the the bonds with those who are alive: Rukia and Renji and was finally able to be his true self.
