2000 years ago that river was the border between the Roman Empire and the northern Germanic and Frysian tribes. The spot is next to the former Roman fortress of Matilo.

The highway is the A4 between Leiderdorp and Zoeterwoude Rijndijk.

Fun fact: on that place, the highway used to be above ground and had a movable bridge while it split the town in half. But because traffic was so heavy at that spot (at one point, it was Netherlands' most busy highway segment), changes had to be made. However, there was not enough room for an extra lane. So they decided to go for a tunnel going under the town and opened in 2012

For anyone wondering this is the Limesaqueduct just before you enter Leiden. 😊😊

Funny how tourists love our country so much. But for me as a Dutch man i hate it. The Netherlands to me feels very utopic. People live in boxes stacked on top or against each other without any passionate design.

Last thing I expected to see this morning was my street in my feed lmfao, this is such a small town too!

So there used to be a bridge going over the water with a 2 lane highway each direction along with a questionable bycicle path. Took them 4 years to tear it all down and the lowering of the tunnel passage for the Rhine (that's the river you see) was a real spectacle. Just 2 monolithic U shaped blocks, insane. The entire area is completely unrecognizable vs what it was just over a decade ago. Amazing feat of engineering (and a lot less traffic noise!)

For those wondering: This Is Leiderdorp, the Netherlands

Wow
I am Dutch and pass this highway many many times. I never knew this was above me when passing the tunnel area.
There are so many tunnels (for cars, trains, trams and metro's) that I never wondered why they were designed on that specific locations. There are several spots where you see boats crossing above you. Near Schiphol international airport the highway goes under the runway. In my hometown Rotterdam the city was cut open for five years over a length of three kilometres to lower the train, enabling to pass a busy canal underneath it. For a longer distance the high speed train from Rotterdam to Amsterdam was dugged under to maintain the farm land view in the Green heart of our provinces (Randstad)

In Maastricht you can cycle (Groene Loper) right on top of the A2 (Koning Willem-Alexander tunnel)

Leiderdorp if I am not incorrect. When I was a kid that highway was a 2 way bridge. My father was the 'brugwachter' there. I have never even seen how it looks from up there since I left Leiderdorp. Super cool.

From the car's view: "there is a sailboat going over my head" and near Schiphol: "darn, is that a boeing 747 taxi-ing over me?"

Always find it funny watching Dutch related content and the comments is just filled to the brim with Dutch comments or people who are Dutch commenting (including me) 😂

I've been to this exact place quite often. Our student frat has no location of our own so we usually use different locations that can be rented to us. One of those locations is the building next to the twisty bicycle path. Its a very serene location with almost no sounds coming from the highway. Definitely some solid infrastructure that could benefit some big cities worldwide.

Yeh so The Netherlands have developed a insane skill with structures due to our geographic location. As a Dutch person i think The Netherlands should exchange knowledge for future economic development😊
