Beatrice Berrut plays her own transcription of Mahler's Adagietto from the 5th symphony.

The symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler was composed in 1901 and 1902, mostly during the summer months at Mahler's holiday cottage at Maiernigg. In February 1901 Mahler had suffered a sudden major hemorrhage and his doctor later told him that he had come within an hour of bleeding to death. The composer spent quite a while recuperating. He moved into his own lakeside villa in the southern Austrian province of Carinthia in June 1901. Mahler was delighted with his newfound status as the owner of a grand villa. According to friends, he could hardly believe how far he had come from his humble beginnings. He was director of the Vienna Court Opera and the principal conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic. His own music was also starting to be successful. Later in 1901 he met Alma Schindler and by the time he returned to his summer villa in summer 1902, they were married and she was expecting their first child.
The Adagietto is said to represent Mahler's love song to his wife Alma. According to a letter she wrote to Willem Mengelberg, the composer left a small poem:

Wie ich Dich liebe, Du meine Sonne,
ich kann mit Worten Dir's nicht sagen.
Nur meine Sehnsucht kann ich Dir klagen
und meine Liebe, meine Wonne!

(In which way I love you, my sunbeam,
I cannot tell you with words.
Only my longing, my love and my bliss
can I with anguish declare.)

Live in Saxon (Switzerland), Espace Consonance. Video by Steve Gilloz.

Mahler has been my favorite composer all my life and i was slightly anxious how a piano transcription could render the sound of the famous adagietto. And you've done it. This is magnificient and haunting. This is so expressive and respects so well the soul of Mahler's music. A huge bravissimo to you. A wonderful discovery.

Before listening I was sceptical how such a wonderful string piece could be played on piano. I am very impressed. Sounds like written for piano. Very, very nice! Brava!

Bravo! The first time I ever heard the original piece I was struggling to get my 3-month old to sleep. A few years later now but this interpretation captures the love and emotion so well.

I have listened three times now and feel certain this is the absolute best transcription of the symphonic movement - passion, dynamics, pacing, tension, and orchestral richness. The base - with pedaling - is appropriately haunting.

Maybe it's the equal-temperament tuning, but MY WORD...the dissonances! Each one tears the heart anew. He really was a madman, wasn't he?

Thank you so much for posting the transcription! You’re ability to reflect Mahler’s symphony on the piano is mesmerizing. Although I have watched this video several times, I am always in awe at your interpretation and the emotion put into it. I am definitely going to pre order this piece so I can eventually play it with my own hands. Thank you for this amazing transcription once again.

So beautifully played. I’m so used to hearing an orchestra playing this, I didn’t think it would sound great on piano. But you played it so beautifully. Thank you. 😊

If there is a way of showing deeper understanding of Mahler's music in general, and then of this very piece of music in particular, this outstanding piano performance is the undoubtful proof of it. All the important finest musical texture, dynamics, harmonic resolving, leeding lines and blending colours make an listener even more engaged in comprehending and experiencing the essence of Mahler's musical message to the mankind.

A most intelligent and well conceived transcription, played in a perfectly balanced, expressive and well-toned way on very well voiced piano.
