"drawn into a fake retreat" seriously, every mongol video contains this phrase, it feels like the tactical equivalent of spamming R1.

Before the seige the ruler of mosul received two letters, one from Hülagü who was asking him for catapults and weapons for the incoming siege while the other was from the caliph asking him to send musicians for the court of Baghdad.

The ruler then said look at these two letters and pray for islam and its followers

Normally I can't do much with Youtube shorts. But on this channel I find them very entertaining. To see the most important moments of "old" video series again visually upgraded is really cool.

One of those moments in history that made a large chunk of people legit believe the world was ending

No way the mongols did a feigned retreat? I don’t blame the Abbasids for falling for it the Mongols never use that tactic ever.

What was left out was the part where the Mongols killed almost every single person. Baghdad was completely depopulated that day.

What Hulagu did to Baghdad is inexcusable. Centuries of innovations in mathematics, philosophy, medicine, etc... were destroyed on that tragic day. Baghdad never recovered from that day.

It's insane to think how much knowledge was lost in this single siege.

This was one of thr worse things to happen to the scientific world.

Abbasid Caliphate I (750-1258 AD)
Abbasid Caliphate II (1261-1517 AD)

The population wasn't driven out of the city: it was annihilated _in situ_ . Estimates put the number killed at 800, 000. Everyone was killed: man, woman, child, babies. The stench of death was so bad that Hulagu had to move his camp upwind of the city.

So much knowledge was lost. Besides Alexandra Bagdads' library, held amazing treasures of literature.

Moral value: NEVER KILL A MONGOL ENVOY. JUST SURRENDER

You’ve had to be one of the unluckiest men in history if you lived during the time of the mongol conquest

Fantastic content! These shorts have been just the thing to take me from completely disinterested in Total War: Attila, to excited to fire it up and give another try. Thanks, keep up the great work!

I thought the city was taken by surrender after a prolonged fighting? In the History of Assassins, I recalled that the Caliph capitulated and ordered the garrison to lay down their arms after the supplies were dwindling. When Hülagü arrived at the palace, he found an overflowing treasury. He reportedly said to the Caliph (and I am paraphrasing here): "If you used your gold to buy food, you would be better prepared, or you could have fed my troops instead."

The Caliph was beaten to death inside a carpet a few days later, as was the custom of Mongols executing princes.

Ibn Al Qamy the Shiite vizier of the last Abbasid Caliph was in league with the Mongols and played a role in fall
