I believe that a lot of these field sports had their origin in war skills. This may have been designed to go over hastily constructed field walls, over abutments and perhaps ditches as well. The javelin throw is obvious. A lot of them came from Scotland, the English wouldn't allow them to have weapons such as muskets, swords, and to the extent that they could, bow and arrows. The shot put was used against the English, either returning spent cannon balls, and large rocks when they didn't have anything else. I think that the "hammer throw" used either a chain, or perhaps a horsehair woven rope, giving them more distance. It may have bought them some time, maybe a few tactical victories, and some serious headaches for the English, but the only time that they were successful was when the English were themselves divided, such as during the English civil wars. As for the English themselves, I think that Polo was a way of practicing horsemanship for their lancers. Ditto foxhunting.
