"Every kid starts out as a natural-born scientist, and then we beat it out of them. A few trickle through the system with their wonder and enthusiasm for science intact"

Hearing him say “extinguished” broke my heart.

This is very true. I grew up with a mother who whenever I mentioned something that I found interesting, she would immediately shut it down or belittle the thought and then question me about it. By the time I got to high school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do in life and didn’t have any real interests. I then started behaving the same way she did. I still today, at 30, struggle with this, but now I’m aware of it and am working towards bettering it.

For any parents out there: If your kid wants to play in the dirt, let them. If they ask you a question that you don’t know, look it up with them and try to explain it to them. That little bit of experience could set the trajectory towards their future.

Puddle jumping is the best. I used to do it with my kid.

“Curiousity extinguished”, so wonderfully said & indeed a tragic loss.

I walked my kids home from school (4), after a heavy rain...
We hit every puddle on the way home...
We had to undress in our garage...
People talked about us for weeks...
It was Awesome!

I swear Neil can have an epiphany when he gets up in the middle of the night to take a dump

When I taught second grade (7 year olds) I had to return them to their parents clean. Haha. One day it was raining and I was so worried about their clothes being muddy after playing in the playground during lunchbreak. One cutie said, "Dont worry teachie, my mom uses oxy powder!"
It would've made the best laundry detergent commercial ever.

I was in a pharmacy, and a mother was struggling with the whole "schoolies" thing Queensland does.

And I reminded her, "gallipoli was treason, you're the adult, you can just 'oops, wrong beach' or catch a train to Melbourne.

Just because you had ten minutes of relevance doesn't mean you're particularly coherent otherwise.

Yes Mr Tyson the best part about childhood is the puddles😊 I loved as a child watching The raindrops go down the window that was my entertainment not a tablet not TV not the radio but the water coming down the window and to be able to go outside and watch to see how one little drop affects the puddle and how it makes ripples it was so beautiful to me that's the best part of childhood

Yes! My little one is 2 and we spend hours at the park collecting leaves, jumping in puddles and looking for fairies (ie bugs and insects in rock walls, knarled roots and mossy trees). I say to him, "Look at all these amazing creations!"

It’s crazy no matter what he’s talking about it’s intriguing, I could listen to this man talk all day

As a kid in the 60/70’s we always played outside when it rained, walked in the curbs barefoot as the rain rushed along them to the sewers, sailed little cheap plastic boats in puddles and of course danced in the rain and jumped in puddles. Such good times. When I had my child, we danced in the rain and jumped in every puddle we encountered. I didn’t care if her clothes got wet or dirty. They could be cleaned, but our fun was more important!

Not only the curiosity was crushed... The spontaneity, the joy. It makes you contained, behaved, rigid, a "good boy/girl" that starts to get lost and to get used to the uncomfortable sensation of behaving to be approved (not loved).

The mom thought "oh crap that's Neil deGrasse Tyson. I can't let him think I just let my kid splash in puddles; I would never want to disappoint him."

I used to take my kids outside during light rains and let them play in the puddles. They are in their late 20s and talk about how much fun they had doing unorthodoxed fun things. My oldest child holds and extremely awesome position because of his curious nature.

Kids learn through fun.

Let kids be kids. As long as they're not bothering anyone else. Kids should be free to explore and play.

When I was a kid growing up in the country my friend and I would go out in the rain and we would play in the creek. Good times ❤
