I order by comic, fiction, manga, non-fiction, then whether the book is hardback or paperback, then height, author surname name, then book title.

spine in is a clear sign of a deep psychological disorder. I'm kidding but really.... By subject is best but not the neatest but for a researcher or someone with a lot of books you could go all the way with Dewey decimal and alphabetized for fiction.
