Return of the international Scout. Volkswagen BUYS International!

You probably know a lot about Volkswagen, maybe that it was founded in 1937 by the German Labor Front or that these days they're known for owning ultra-high-end supercars like Bentley, Lamborghini, and Porsche, to name a few. You probably don't know a lot about the Scout brand. Like that, it was an all-terrain family vehicle that was one of the first SUVs, though they weren’t called that then. It was a hit.
But in 2021, these two incredibly, incredibly different companies announced that they were merging? In today's video, an American company and a German company meet for business, and the Scout brand for a new electric off-road vehicle is born. But wait a minute... Volkswagen? I thought International makes highway trucks? Does this mean that Volkswagen is going into the truck business?

In today's video we look at Return of the international Scout. Volkswagen BUYS International!...Keep watching to see international harvester, the scout, volkswagen, international harvestor scout, scout international, international scout ii, international harvester scout 2, international scout 2, international scout ii diesel, 1978 international scout 2 ,international scout diesel engine, international scout 2 diesel, international scout nissan diesel, volkswagen suv, new volkswagen, volkswagen 2026. how the scout is going electric, what volkswagen is doing about the electric scout and anything else related to international scout.

Do you want the scout to be an EV or what engine do you think it should be?

As much as I’ll like to see the return of the Scout, I wouldn’t buy an electric off road vehicle due to the fact there are not many charging stations in the great outdoors. Good for mall crawlers I guess.

Certainly, for the price this will cost, you could build one hell of a Scout you'd be proud to be seen in.

This is a disaster. Scout people have been wanting the brand revived for years. THIS IS NOT THE WAY!

Back in the day we owned a Scout Terra with a 345 cu in V-8. When you punched that thing it got scary fast. The top was fiberglass that came off, convertible pick up. We used to park it at the baseball field, throw a blanket on the hood and sit up there leaning against the windshield to watch the games. We'd do the same at drive-in movies. Never dented the hood. Had a lot of fun with that truck but parts started getting hard to find as Scouts were kind of Frankensteins and used parts from other makes.

International stopped selling the Scout because the US EPA mandated that emissions levels must be a calculated average across the whole line of vehicles and where the big automakers had compact cars along side of pickups, International had only "light duty" vehicles (trucks). The Scout II survived for a few years in that the emissions were less restrictive to higher GVW rated vehicles and those numbers by IH where increased with heavy duty axles until the standards were applied again to higher GVW vehicles. It is a bit full circle they return as electric as an emissions play. There was a lawsuit case - International Harvester Co. v. Ruckelshaus, 478 F.2d 615 (D.C. Cir. 1973) over emission rule changes.

Great to hear that the Scout is making a come back. But if it is going to compete and survive, it needs to offer multiple drive trains (v6, v8, diesel, E).
The scout could have both public and military uses.

Growing up in rural Iowa in the 60’s I spent a lot of time at the local IH dealer with brand new tractors, combines, miscellaneous farm implements and, yes, even a couple brand new Scouts parked outside. The old Scouts, Travelalls and IH pickups weren’t appreciated so much in their day as the ride and handling characteristics left much to be desired and the local tractor shop wasn’t perhaps the best venue to market and service them.

My dad had a 67 Scout with the V8, it would go any where, the only problem was it was a rust bucket as it became a rust bucket after it was getting older. Engine an running gear out lasted the body.

I enjoyed camping with the family in our 1970 Scout. The light blue inside and out grew on you.. It was a pig with the 304 V8 with 7 MPG on a good day. It went anywhere!

My Scout was RWD with 6 cyl, 3 on the floor non-synchromesh and manual steering but I loved it nonetheless. It wasn’t a tank with fenders, but I used to call it a tractor with fenders.

We had a '71 IH pickup. It WAS a beast! 345 "Power Pack" V8 with a 4 speed. It just ran forever and would tow anything. Also had a Scout with an Isuzu diesel. Decent mileage, but body wasnt very good. I'd consider buying a new Scout IF it at least came as a Hybid. How about a TD engine option?

If they make a pickup let's hope they offer a single cab (2 door) version with a 6.5 foot bed and real 4 wheel drive. Those super long double-cab 4wd trucks are too big for many trails.

An EV “Scout” will never be a Scout, only in name.

I LOVE the old Scout... hope to obtain one sometime this year. The new one looks nice but if the top doesn't come off, I won't be interested.

I’d love to see the scout come back but not as an EV. You couldn’t give me one, this will be a bust.

The artist rendering looks great. The weight of the tires alone will drain those batteries so fast you won't make it to the trail. Does it come with a trailer generator and ten gallons of FUEL to make it home?

hadda 1975 scout II, bought it in hawaii, jungle love, loved it so much i shipped it to cally when i moved, mountains, beaches, moved to vegas, desert, did it all flawlessly, even towed pretty well, for a short wheelbase like that, was great havin the 4x4 option when launching my boat on slippery launches and night and day better ride than any jeep i been in, one of the best vehicles ever made
