Hi, I’m Krista! I make math courses to keep you from banging your head against the wall. ;)

Math class was always so frustrating for me. I’d go to a class, spend hours on homework, and three days later have an “Ah-ha!” moment about how the problems worked that could have slashed my homework time in half. I’d think, “WHY didn’t my teacher just tell me this in the first place?!”

The open courseware videos from universities and also even the helpfuls videos Youtubers decided to put up on Youtube are great supplemental material. I am not sure if videos online can replace going to college but it can help people either have that advantage in knowing or find out what they are actually capable of. I think being tested in a college and university setting really pinpoint strengths and weakness and see where gaps in knowledge can be filled in or even solidfy current knowledge.

I currently write software as a software developer. Self taught business owner at 18 and an Engineering dual major still in college. My advice to others? Get under the wing of the seniors in the related field and learn from their practical experience. As much as you possibly can. Have your own projects to show effort and commitment during the hiring process. Apply for positions that may not exist and use University resources as a platform. Not a starting point. Be the job that you want.

Hi Krista! Totally agree with Gary. The future of higher education is online.

I think that public schools are going to become obsolete, and for the better. In my experience, very few teachers are competent in the subject they teach, especially in the sciences. I'm pretty thankful for the few good teachers I had, but it is too much luck involved in getting one. I think secondary education is going to be a mix, mostly because college prices are going to have to come down to compete.

Ya, I wish it had turned out more clear. But I agree, subtitles would help!

This still baffles me but everytime my professors teach the course, some professor tell you how the material can apply to the real world and some do not. This pretty much forced me to do a lot of research myself and ask experts on forums and borrow textbooks that actually give you the applications to certain fields. So I guess my professor helped me indirectly in that sense. o.0

Having gone through a doctoral degree back in the 1980s and now undertaking another BSc, I can honestly say the depth and breath of didactic material available just on YouTube (let alone a richer subscription based site) is simply unparalleled. Textbooks excel in reducing important concepts to a few ill explained lines, that sometimes are almost deliberately obtuse. But a few keystrokes can bring up many alternative and usually more intuitive presentations that can be watched, paused, rewatched.

I am in college. 1 year left til graduating with a BA in Computer Science. Where is college education heading? Based on my experience, it really depends on how much time and committment one is willing to put into the homework and invested in reading ahead of the textbook aka one's self-reliance in getting the work done. If one did that, I would say that person would say college education rocks because he/she did really well on the exams and understand what is happening during lecture.

Wonderful upload Krista...I believe the internet allows for the evolution of information sharing and likewise the progression of education through people such as you, Khan, Udemy, Coursera, Edx, FutureLearn etc

Hey Krista, could you also upload tutorials on One dimensional wave and diffusion equations and their applications, Laplace and Poisson equations, Complex Integration, Cauchy residue theorem and contour integration?

Hey Krista, well I do agree with both you and your guest, with respect to the educational reform that is on the precipice of this particular country. If we contrast America with other well-developed countries, especially in Europe, we observe that proportionally there are more adults with higher education degrees working throughout the cities in Europe than here in America. This is the evidence that shows why America is slowly receding back in its own technological and innovative precedence. Why are we not training engineers and technologists to solve our most fundamental problems of today? It is because we are selling their future short, that is why! Students hardly have any concept of what debt means when they are in their first year at college, but once they have graduated, the prospect of graduate school becomes foreboding, simply due to finance. Colleges are the ultimate business scheme! And it is so shameful, because on the one hand, it is one of the best investments a student can potentially make, but then he or she is reduced to indentured servitude at some faceless corporation doing menial and trivial tasks, for which a rigorous college education is hardly necessary! The age of the internet will upset the established order, there is not a shadow of a doubt about that! But beyond reducing the costs of higher education and diminishing the arrogance of prestigious universities, most notable the Ivy Leagues, America has to reinvigorate its technological ingenuity. And that can only come about once its populace is scientifically literate and has embraced its wonders from a very young age. Moreover, it also helps to learn from other countries, such as Finland and its educational reform. If you haven't already, I recommend that you check out how their students went from having some of the lowest standards to now consistently ranking within the top three countries in the entire world!

Hey Krista,

Did you find that the CL education helped a lot?  I am in the process of re-branding an elearning company that I recently acquired and I am studying social media marketing right now.  Interested in learning how others in education have fared using this medium.

Hey Krista, did you minor in math? How come you don't have a degree in math? I came to like math too late in my studies...and I wish I had taken math more seriously in the past. So it is basically too late for me too go back now and actually apply and REALLY understand math.
