Sharper Image Ionic Breeze Quadra Air Cleaner had a button that wasnt working. I had 'hacked' it about 10 years (or more) ago and it finally stopped working. I did a more robust repair and cleaned what I could. Its only used to keep a musty basement not musty.

I just picked up a used model. Everything working. Just found this video while poking around for more info on the device. I watched the whole video, it was so well done. Bravo. Going to look over your channel to see what else you've fixed. One time I swapped the mini LCD on a Blackberry, and a new battery on an original iPod. I don't know how to solder like you, nor work with a meter, or chips and other electrical components. Keep up the good work! Cheers.

Hey there! I did that project by taking apart the Ionic Breeze and clean the insides of it. If you're talking about how you can clean those wires, the best way to do it is to get sandpaper, like a 600 grit or higher, cut that sandpaper and fold it in half. Then very gently(without pulling too quick or too hard), slide the sandpaper back and forth against the wires. What it is is that when it was used over the years, the white crust builds up on the wires, making it ineffective. By gently sanding it, you're actually removing the white crust and restoring the wires like it was brand-new. So after I sand both wires, I put it back together, and it runs perfect!

I know this is 5 years old but thanks for sharing this! Helped me figure out why mine was broken. Mine stopped powering on as well, though when I dug into it I found corrosion on the switch board that tells the cartridge is in. One of the traces was broken, so I soldered a wire in to reconnect the two points. Now it works great!

Thank you!!! I haven't used mine in years, and when I went to put it in my camper, it started once, then wouldn't adjust or turn on again after I unplugged it. I just pulled the board, cut the wires and put in a momentary switch and it works again! Love this old thing!!!

It was the switch on mine. This video helped me fix it so quick my wife thinks it was a setup.
Such a nice device and then the membrane switch is so cheap and covered with cheap Scotch tape. I blame the managers, since I'm an
Thanks! Great video.

THANK YOU!! I am in Oregon where the fires are causing dangerous air quality problems, evacuations, loss of homes and lives. I have 3 big dogs that have to go outside a few times a day, at least. Every time I open the door to let them out/in, smoke comes ROLLING IN. I have two of these, one wasn’t working. The other I keep in the room where the dogs sleep to keep their air clean. Meantime the rest of the house smells like smoke and I know it’s bad for me.
Mine are newer models, so, the button cavity is enclosed. All I had to do was give the contacts a good cleaning and it’s working again!! I’m hoping by morning the smoke smell will be gone or mostly gone. I don’t know how small of particles these can get hold of, but we’ll see what the effect is in the morning. Thanks man. You gave me hope and a little peace of mind amidst unimaginable times.

thank you very much I have an ionic breeze that quit working. The tape on the little metal clip that allows it to be turned on came off and the clip fell off. I found the clip thanks to your video and taped it back on and now it works just fine. thank you once again.

These units have to be pretty clean. They put out negative ions, not ozone, so they are safe to use. Thousands of volts are produced when operating threw the small diameter wires. That's why you will see blue arcs of electricity when looking inside while it is operating. The little circuit board he is working on has membrane switches that fail over time and dry out and fall apart. A good product, but was made cheap.

Thanks Frank.
In my case the manufacturer didn't clean off the flux well enough after soldering that top safety interlock switch circuit board. After nearly 20 years the circuit board trace had completely corroded through. There was infinite resistance across the gap, even with the switch closed. I used your fiberglass brush (from an auto paint scratch repair kit) trick to remove the solder mask and bad trace material. Then I made a solder and wire bridge across the gap and voila! I have a working Ionic Breeze again. I'll be lending it to a friend who is suffering from allergies.

I have one of these units so thank you for making this video I'm about to attempt this breakdown and hopefully I won't have to solder anything. I'VE READ IN COMMENTS HERE AND ELSEWHERE THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE THESE UNITS LOVE THEM. RELATIVELY LIGHTWEIGHT YOU SHOULD START UP A REHAB REFURBISH SERVICE WITH A SHIPPING COST AND GO TO TOWN I BET YOU YOU WOULD GET A CHUNK OF RESPONSES

Same problem with my unit. This product was amazingly robust.

I was mostly interested in how to open up the case to clean the inside better. So I watched through to the end. Thanks.

Oh my GOSH! Where are you in the world? I have 4 of these and my biggest best one won’t turn on. I refuse to get rid of it hoping I can find someone to fix it. You’ve restored my hope that it is possible.
Your amazing and have all the gadgets and tools. I’m a single widow and am wondering? Would you be willing and able to check mine out and fix it (if possible) I wonder how much you would charge and the zip code your in? So I can see how much it would cost to ship it back and forth.
My husband left me with all the tools but I have no idea how to use them. I am going to clean it very good first.

Before I took my unit apart, I found this tip, and it worked; "Plug the Ionic Breeze unit in and turn it on. If the clean light remains lit, reset the Ionic Breeze by pressing and holding down the power button on the top of the unit for 30 seconds, then release."

I thought I was pretty handy fixing things like this, but this guy (Frank) showed me a few things.

We have many of these throughout our house and love them. Have had HEPA before but their noisy, use a lot of electricity, fan motors break after a few years, and replacement filters are expensive. These last forever as long as you take care of them. This one looks like it’s been through hell, but it’s awesome you were able to fix it and it didn’t get tossed in the trash. I just wished you would have cleaned the white gunk on the two wires with the beads. I have taken mine apart before to clean them and noticed a dramatic improvement in performance.

Excellent job
Good lesson in not letting anything stop you ! That switch - arrgh !
I have an Ionic Breeze to fix. My first action will be to take it to some powerful air compressor and blow everything out through the hole at the top when the collector plates are removed.
I was in a tavern in Cocoa Beach FL once. They had a large ionic air cleaner mounted to the ceiling, with powerful fans moving lots of air through it. Though people were smoking in the tavern, the air was clear and no sign of smoke. That was a real lesson to me. Wonder if I could DIY one like that - dust be gone !
