I'm an Aussie of Welsh descent. According to sources on the web - Originally the town was named Llanfairpwll, often shortened to Llanfair. Apparently a smarty looking for publicity for the town decided to extend it - as it is known now. The joke is that this really is a sentence. It translates as, "St Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysillo near the red cave." Double "LL" is pronounced- by putting the tongue on the roof of the mouth and blowing a breath- sort of ! My daughter has it in her Welsh name but in Oz we just pronounce it as "L". Love your channel.

Everyone loves to talk abbout Llanfair, but who knows about Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu, in New Zealand? That's just not fair.

The weatherman did a great job of pronouncing it. I'm from South Wales and live in Australia. Sometimes it is shortened to Llanfair P.G. Very good, in Welsh, mewn Cymraeg, da iawn !

Aussies would definitely be shortening/abbreviating that one!
According to google, In English it translates to "St. Mary's Church in the hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio near the red cave."

We have a few suburb names here in Adelaide that tend to stump non-adelaidians.
Thebarton is the main one that turns people teeth inside out. As a kid it was great fun to watch interstate celebrities try to pronounce Thebarton when reading out a donation at our televised Christmas Appeal fundraiser. Some had trouble with Munno Para, Salisbury and even Glenelg. There were a number of regional town names that took a bit of a hiding as well, Nuriootpa being the main one.

That town was only named that in the 1880s & it was called that specifically to attract tourists.

We have a suburb here in Adelaide called “Thebarton” and people always miss-pronounce it as “The Barton” 🤣

in australia we'd just say lianwheelbarrowwheelbarrow. there's a lot of people who's last names are long and hard to pronounce in english so we just say wheelbarrow wheelbarrow. if their first name is hard to pronounce we call them a common name that starts with the same 1st letter like bob, jim, vic, tom etc.
