In 2013, Nike made a $14-billion mistake: they disrespected Steph Curry. As his incumbent shoe sponsor, Nike had first dibs when it came to re-signing Steph, and the rising superstar was fiercely loyal to the swoosh at the time. But thanks to a single meeting, Nike lost the chance to rep the greatest shooter of all time for good. From the start, it was clear that Steph would not be a top priority for Nike, as Lynn Merritt, a high-ranking company executive and a regular presence at athlete pitch meetings, was glaringly absent. Then, one of the officials mistakenly referred to Stephen as “Steph-on,” another clear indication of how little stock Nike had put into the meeting. But the final nail in the coffin came in the form of a PowerPoint presentation that featured Kevin Durant’s name—clearly, they were just using the same pitch they made to Durant on Steph. By the time the meeting had mercifully wrapped, Steph and his father Dell had completely soured on Nike, allowing Under Armour to swoop in with a prime proposal. The company offered Steph $4 million annually plus a signature shoe to be the face of UA, whereas Nike was only offering $2.5 million to be a “tier-2” athlete without enough support to even hold his own sponsored youth camp. For Steph, the decision was an easy one—and by 2016, Curry’s signature shoe had outsold Durant’s, Kyrie Irving’s, and Kobe Bryant’s combined.

With Steph having added a staggering $14 billion worth of value to Under Armour since signing with them, it is no wonder the company recently inked the 34-year-old superstar to a lifetime contract worth a reported $1 billion. Fortunately, you do not need that kind of money to get your hands on Steph’s 2009 Topps rookie card. A Chrome issue /999, this card is cleaner than Steph’s shooting stroke and dazzles in PSA 10 grade. Nike may have dropped the ball with Steph Curry, but you do not have to miss your chance to lock down this incredible rookie card.
