Why we need to keep fossil fuels in the ground | Keep it in the ground

We need to reduce emissions to keep our planet safe for future generations - the science is clear.
However, it can be quite hard to get your head around how to do that. Here's a very simple idea from writer and climate campaigner, Bill McKibben: keep fossil fuels in the ground. If we were to burn all the fossil fuel reserves we currently know about, experts forecast the Earth's temperature would warm by more than 2C and have catastrophic effects. Guardian journalists explain the 'keep it in the ground' theory in easy to understand terms.

Don't forget the absolutely massive part animal agriculture has to play. Green house gas emissions, water usage, rainforest destruction etc.

We have to stop having the fossil fuel industry decide how we address climate change.

It's quite hypocritical that they're using a video to communicate this.

Did I miss the part where they stated how many gigatons we've already burnt? How close are we to the threshold?

you know, you can always retain the CO2 in special collectors instead of releasing it into the atmosphere

If there is no demand, there would be no supply of oil. Our everyday lives has to many things that are made from fossil fuels whether it is directly or indirectly, so the demand would be inevitably high. So what is the point of tackling the oil companies?   How sucessful would it be?

We will have to live in large mostly self sufficient rural communes to accomplish that.

so, the question is, what will be worse for humanity, essentially putting our global economy on a starvation diet, or climate change?

i'd argue that we can deal with whatever impacts climate change has as a society, sea level rise, not that big an issue really, loss of available farmland, GM crops are already starting to deal with this problem. loss of biodiversity, again, animals are pretty and all but what damage does this really do to people?

on the other hand, nobody has yet put forward a reasonable alternative to a fossil fuel based economy.

Hi there!

I am a Campaign Director at ActionStation and we are running a campaign in NZ to get Fonterra (our second biggest coal user) to commit to no new coal. As part of this campaign we are uploading this excellent video to our FB page: facebook.com/ActionStationNZ.

We will credit you and post links back to your campaign, and this channel. I just think this video is such a great explainer of complexities.

I hope that is okay? If it is not, please get in touch with me and I'll remove it.

Cheers!

Laura
