The Airplanes With No Wings

A team of NASA engineers are tasked with what would have seemed impossible at the time: Designing an aircraft that has no wings. And so begun the experimental M2-F1 project. It eventually lead to the Northrop M2-F2, HL-10, and other lifting body airplanes. An aviation masterpiece, some of it's design elements influenced aircraft like the B2 Spirit Stealth Bomber, and the US Navy would incorporate it into it's autonomous drones like the X-47B. We look at the full history of the program and everything it achieved.

Interesting side note: This was the aircraft that crashed in the opening montage from the " Six Million Dollar Man" The pilot survived the crash, but lost an eye.

The lifting body isn't gone. Sierra Nevada is actively building the Dream Chaser for cargo and possibly manned missions to the ISS. Boeing's X-37 is a direct descendent of the lifting bodies in this video, and has successfully flown six top secret missions, the longest being over 900 days in orbit.
