Teenagers, what’s something your parents do that secretly drives you insane?

My dad was upset when I got older and wasn’t interested in hunting, fishing, or doing other things with him. It caused tension between him and my mom because she’d been telling him for years to spend time with me when I was younger if he wanted to have a connection when I got older.

I remember asking him to play basketball, but he’d be too tired. I asked him to build a model, and he’d tell me not to make a one-person job a two-person job. Looking back, I see I was trying to connect with him, but the reality is I was too young to be interesting to him.

My wife and I decided not to have kids for several reasons. One reason for me was that I didn’t want to have a child unless I could give them the time they deserve, and the truth is, I have other things I don’t want to give up to do that.

My parents weren’t happy with our decision, and my dad tried to have a “talk” where he basically told me I was wrong. It pissed me off, so I called him out. I reminded him that he never did what he should have as a parent and that he couldn’t claim to have my best interests in mind when he just avoided the hard parts of parenting. He wanted a redo, where he could just have the fun grandparent moments without the tough stuff.

He’s a great provider and I know he cares, but we’re very different people. We have one main common interest: boating, but even that, we don’t always agree on how to do.

What drives me insane is when my mother expects me to be at her need. Any time of the day, like I'll be resting because I had an exhausting day and then she'd just call my name and I would have to be there for her. It's gotten better but it's still really frustrating
