November 4, 2018:
Highlights from Requiem in D minor by W. A. Mozart
Directed by Carol Negro, the ‘Everybody Sings’ choir together with local musicians and solo vocalists from Fairfield, Mt. Pleasant, and Iowa City presented an evening celebrating the music of Mozart.
Performers included the Everybody Sings chorus directed by Carol Negro, along with students, amateurs, and professional musicians from southeast Iowa. Oboist Jason Edwards, soprano Donna DeBose and base Blair Buffington, all of whom are Professors of Music at Iowa Wesleyan University, were among the distinguished soloists. In addition, Emily Wheeler and Dennis Wilhoit will be singing the alto and tenor solos in the Requiem. Local instrumentalists included Ann Bosold, Nathan Zumstein, Albert Stimson, Donna Nelson, Paul Squillo, and Francis Thicke.
Everybody Sings community chorus, directed by Carol Negro, was founded three years ago in the belief that the voice is the sound of the soul, and that all voices deserve to be heard. The chorus is non-auditioned, and all are welcomed. Our mission is to expand the joy of life through singing; and to build and strengthen our community through cultural events.
The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who commissioned the piece for a Requiem service to commemorate the anniversary of his wife's death.
