Water Quality Sampling - Klehini River

Tlingit & Haida's Native Lands and Resources team has been collecting baseline water quality data in five rivers: Klehini and Chilkat (Klukwan/Haines), Taku (Juneau), Stikine (Wrangell) and the Alsek (Yakutat).

The information they gather will help protect our watersheds in the future. Their work is part of Tlingit & Haida’s goal of data sovereignty, since the Tribe owns the data the team collects.

The baseline data shows what heavy metals and/or contaminants are in the water right now. That way if there is development upstream (like mining) that could possibly pollute the rivers, we know what quality the river should be returned to should the watershed be damaged.
