THAT WAS THE BIGGEST CULTURE SHOCK I HAD WHEN I WENT TO JAPAN WHEN EVERYONE PRETTY MUCH SCREAMS FOR THE WAITERS ATTENTION

When I was a waitress we used to get a lot of Japanese businessmen in the restaurant and it was definitely a shock at first to see how direct they are but once I got used to them just calling on me when they wanted something (it was a very small place) I actually came to appreciate it. I hated when local people would just try and make me come over by briefly making eye contact and expecting me to read their mind! Just tell me what you want please! As long as they weren't being too loud or disturbing the other customers, it was kind of useful lol

We don't ask in America. We sit awkwardly and hope to God they hand us the bill soon so we don't wait around forever 😭

your candid delivery always helps me confidence living in japan and 'sumimasen'ing or just walking up to the register and being like hey

I much rather pay at the cashier. I always feel like when I pay at the table and then leave the other workers don't know if I'd paid or not and it feels illegal just leaving 😂

I really would expect it the other way around. Never thought Japanese would be loud and yell, but be subtle and gesture for it.

we have diners in america and you always pay at the front. also in america waiters come you often to see if you’re finished so if you yell you’re very rude. the worst thing you can do in america while dining is snap at your waiter or yell to them.

In france, we ask our most charismatic friend to signal the waiter without sound

At most diners in my area (New Jersey), you get the check and then pay at a counter your way out.

Honestly it makes more sense in japan because in the US, you wouldn't even know as a waiter sometimes if they hadn't finished the plate or look like they are still doing something.

The US in some restaurants have small electronic menus where you can order and pay. Saves a lot of time trying to call on the waitress/waiters but the service is....not so good ☹️

what's funny is, the American way of being polite and quiet is how you'd expect the Japanese to do it.
