How The Media Won It For Trump

Did legacy media lose it for Harris, and new media win it for Trump? Marina and Richard take us through how both campaigns used the media as tools to put their messages across and support their campaigns.

One of the TV events of the year is upon us as 12 celebrities head into the jungle for I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. With the lineup in place we go through the runners and riders of this year's camp mates.

Another event in the calendar is the release of the annual Now! compilation album. Richard gives us a history of its release, its heyday, and how it fits into the future of music.

Recommendations:
Richard: The Diplomat (Netflix)

Marina's achilles heel is believing she has a smart-set pulse on, like, everything, and the rest of us can just do one.

Marina's comments on the politics parts seem so ill informed when it comes to Kimmel, Bezos and more. First time ive been quite disappointed with this pod

You've only got to watch 5 minutes of Laura Kuenssberg on the BBC to realise that 'impartiality' plays absolutely NO part in her way of thinking.

Can I say that it is very slightly disengenuous to to talk about Jimmy Kimmel in tears saying he'll be on a list because whilst those two things did happen, the bit about the list was during the cold open sketch where he was comedically packing his bags to leave the country, he teared up during the shows monologues when he was talking about feeling bad for a vast array of people who Trump won't be good for and as he said "the vast array of hard-working immigrants who make this country" he choked up, the way Marina put it sounded like he was being selfish and self-obsessed, when I'd argue the opposite. I hope that's fair. Love the podcast - it makes me actively want to walk the dogs instead of it being a chore!

Bezos didn’t tell the Post not to endorse out of “fairness” or anything to do with journalism, but because he supported Trump and not who the post wanted to endorse.

But Trump had celebrity endorsements, Musk, Hulk Hogan, Dr Phil, Joe Rogan, Caitlyn Jenner so those would be an example of celebrity endorsements working. Marina Hyde seems slightly off on her analysis.

Many women voted for Trump, media skips that...

The low bar to entry on ‘informing’ on TikTok etc is simply a low bar for truth and accountability.

The one thing that hasn’t changed from when I was young and being young now is the control of the political parties and the influence of dogma and political tribalism. Political parties are a brand, and as countless influencers have realised, brand is king. But brands only work if the message is simple (to the point of obscuring so much detail that it is barely the truth any longer) and that hoards of supporters agree with absolutely everything, even when they probably don’t. The proof of this is the extreme dogmas like communism and fascism. They fail immediately the moment anyone disagrees, so to survive, they have to silence criticism. None of that has changed. The messenger has changed, they nature of consumption has changed, but the political parties and their insistence that support is 100% (or you are a traitor) is stronger than ever. Dangerously so. You see this on social media. Whole legions of people taking sides in an absolute way, and then another group who dare not say anything at all. How terrible is that? And it is not simply at the extremes of views any longer, but also seen towards the middle, the result being that the middle is being divided and pushed out to the edges. While being part of a political party is seen as more important than simply good governance, this will persist. And with modern media streams, it will become more divisive still.

C'mon Marina, don't be disingenuous. You know that Jimmy Kimmel "choked up" when he was talking about the situation immigrants are facing now that Trump has been elected.

You obviously haven’t followed the Kimmel/Trump thing

Marina, You do know that Trumptob has called out Kimmel by name several times. Elon has done the same.

Trust me Marina, the late night hosts are very much under trumps skin. Definitely all in his top 100 list.

I’ve been to America many times. North, South, East, Central, West, big city and small town. I think you overestimate the average Americans grasp on what’s going on in their own country. Most have old prejudices which are easily manipulated by whatever media they consume.

One og the most googled items was, ' What ate tarifs?. ' AFTER the vote. Like what is the EU after Brexit vote.

I smirked when Richard said how ridiculous would it be if Channel 4 endorsed an election candidate. Ok, not explicitly endorse but I do remember their coverage of Corbyn's election night.

There is also a shift in influence from information, from whichever media, to physical experience. Eg: "the economy is great" Vs "I can't afford to pay my rent.

People buy physical copies because streaming services are known to remove titles from their catalog. Books have diapered from Amazon-kindle etc.

It's interesting to hear Marina discuss US media, showing that she has absolutely zero understanding of the US market, who watches what, and of it's history.

I just watched his opening monologue after the election...HE DIDN'T CRY?!!!!

if youre gonna pontificate guys, you've got to get it right.
