In the chess world, Magnus Carlson is a dominant champion like MVDP in cycling. So much so that there is something they call the 'Magnus Carlson effect'. Magnus can play a bad move, but his opponents know he's so good that they can't believe it's a bad move and instead think it's some kind of trap. So, they don't play the best move in response. I kinda think in cycling we similarly witness the 'Mathieu Van Der Poel effect'. He's so good that he makes other riders 2nd guess themselves.

Tom Boonen said on Belgian TV that tactics are actually useless for RvV and PR. That not once was the tactic of the team that was discussed in advance also executed or could be executed because so many events took place. That it was always anticipating the event that took place.

He thinks that MvdP can anticipate much better than WvA. That MvdP uses the unexpected event to his advantage because he can switch quickly and rides more on intuition.

You got to promote MVDP to #3, based on consistency and the number of monument wins in the past 3 years. Also, his lead outs to Phillipsen in TDF two years ago led to 4 stage wins, Phillipsen won MSR and came 2nd in Paris Roubaix, all that helped and inspired by Mathieu. Jonas and Primos are declining and you gotta start being honest that in 2025 MVDP is top 3

Wanted to add about the drop/hole on the road on a left turn at 30.8km to go! Both MVDP and Ganna were shown getting surprised by it, but they had no real issues keeping the bike upright

My favorite part was when the camera guy was focusing on MVdP front wheel and panned up to his wrist where he had his hand rolled over to show off that Richard Mille, $450K watch he was sporting. Product placement on lock. Off the front, and still had the wherewithal to get that framed up. True professional. 😂
