Every summer, some very special visitors come to Romania: Transylvanian Saxons, part of the German-speaking minority whose roots in this region date back to the Middle Ages. Most of them left the country during the Communist dictatorship but for several years now, they have been returning regularly to their former homeland, some even settling there permanently.

I found out about my father's family and that they were Transylvanian Saxons when I was in my 50s. The story emerged as I took a trip back to Romania to the Seibenburgen at that time. I wrote a large part of the story, meant to become historical novel, almost 30 years ago. Now I am looking at picking up the story and finishing it. It treats my relationship with my father, my travel journey, learning about the culture, but quite importantly, the story of what happened to the Transylvania saxons at the end of the second world war and how they were deported to labor camps in Russia. My relatives were deported. It was an amazing journey for me and I still hold it closely in my heart. Please wish me luck on completing my manuscript.

"Romania is one of the poorest countries in Europe." You need to check those stats again, buddy. I call BS on your statement.
