Thank You, Notre Dame Fans: I Stand Corrected

The first Black head football coach at the University of Notre Dame was Tyrone Willingham and not Marcus Freeman.

For those that may not know, Tyrone Willingham did a damn great job when he was head coach at notre dame, despite the odds being against him. Back in a time when the dominant society wasn't giving black men no chances.

Lady Boule, you are right. I just watched his Press Conference from YouTube regarding the National Championship Game and you are right, Marcus Freeman is afraid to defend his black heritage. A Black American journalist asked him how does it feel to be the first black coach playing for a national championship and the fact it's going to be played on MLK Day which is next Monday, he kind of deflected from the question by specifically including all minority groups should be given the opportunity. He refuses to just acknowledge and answer the question from a direct black perspective. He's afraid of offending the Masses! However, that's typical of someone who is black or half black that is afraid of losing their job. He thinks he may mean well, but he does come off like he's passive and the stance that Tiger Woods took to defend his blackness by not even acknowledging it. Sad!

I was born and raised in Alabama. Almost everyone here is either an Alabama or Auburn fan. I've always hated the Crimson Tide. Notre Dame was the only team which constantly beat Bama. For that reason, I became a Notre Dame fan. Today, at Notre Dame, the head football coach is black, the head men's basketball coach is black and the head women's basketball coach is black. Also, Bama will NEVER hire a black head football coach. Buford and Bubba would not stand for it.

Whoopy do! So since they started, their football league, they had "ONE" black coach, before this guy.

For all those black players that help this school, one previous black coach and one now, doesn't make up for it!

Willingham was hired because Notre Dame was being punished for recruiting violations and they needed someone to clean up its image. Willingham was doing a good job with limited resources but he was fired because Notre Dame wanted to hire Barry Switzer from the NFL and give him a ten year contract. This is the first time in the university's history that they did not honor a football coach's five year contract.
There was no portal at this time so the players that Willingham developed had no place in Switzer's program. They either got dropped, rode the bench, or transferred to another school while losing a year of eligibility. Switzer was a bust and Notre Dame had to give him a buyout well before he finished his ten year deal.

The "First of ..." honor should only go to Black Americans, descendants of American Chatel Slavery because the laws restricting access to education and careers were directed towards Black Americans and Black Americans were the ones who succeeded in changing America through extreme sacrifice.

So-called POC who immigrated after the Civil Rights Movement have access without the discrimination our people faced and still face don't deserve the "First of..."

Giving them this honor cheapens the "First of..." significance.

I hope we advocate to change this after ee succeed in getting our reparations.

They only gave Jerod Mayo 1 year with the Patriots, Antonio Pierce 1 year with the Raiders & Ran Carthon 2 years as GM with the Titans. There are several College Football & NFL teams who have never had a Black Head Coach... 🥺🥺

Mark Jackson had Golden State. He was ran out of town right before they went on their championship line and they brought in a Steve Kerrvwho played with Michael Jordan shoes with him. So Steve Kerr gets the credit but it was really Mark Jackson to get out of work😢. Mark Jackson got labeled homophobia and lost any chance of coaching basketball. 😢 He would be perfect at a place that Minnesota.❤
