Rethinking AI Evolution: Is OpenAI Moving Away from Numbered Generations?

Recent buzz from the VivaTech conference in Paris hints that OpenAI may be stepping away from a conventional, numbered approach in the naming its forthcoming artificial intelligence models. Romain Huet, OpenAI's Head of Developer Experience, during his presentation, hinted at the company's shift away from "GPT-5" as a brand.

The speculated movement is based on Huet's presentation where GPT-3 era, GPT-4 era, and the "today" phase were signaled but the mention of GPT-5 was conspicuously absent. Reflecting on the potential growth of AI models in the future, Huet hinted at multiple sizes of OpenAI models becoming a norm and not just a one-size-fits-all for ChatGPT and other products.

CEO Sam Altman’s recent evasive responses regarding the release of the new model also fuel suspicions. Instead of discussing the anticipated GPT-5, Altman preferred to focus on many future models coming this year.

OpenAI made a significant mark with the release of GPT-3 and ChatGPT, showcasing an exponential progress in AI. However, it appears the future holds bigger surprises. According to Huet’s slide, something referred to as GPT-Next might surface by the year-end, presumably an evolved and more refined version of GPT-4o.

With OpenAI focusing on deeper assessment of any new model before its release, we anticipate more innovative, yet safety-conscious AI models on the horizon.
