Sinéad Lohan - To Ramona

Sinéad Lohan sang the definitive version of this Bob Dylan song in 1996. Lyrics below.

Ramona, come closer
Shut softly your watery eyes
The pangs of your sadness
Will pass as your senses will rise
The flowers of the city
Though breathlike, get deathlike some times
And there's no use in trying
To deal with the dying
Though I cannot explain that in lines.

Your cracked country lips
I still wish to kiss
As to be by the strength of your skin
Your magnetic movements
Still capture the minutes I'm in
But it grieves my heart, love
To see you trying to be a part of
A world that just don't exist
It's all just a dream, babe
A vacuum, a scheme, babe
That sucks you into feeling like this.

I can see that your head
Has been twisted and fed
With worthless foam from the mouth
I can tell you are torn
Between staying and returning
Back to the south
You've been fooled into thinking
That the finishing end is at hand
Yet there's no one to beat you
No one to defeat you
Accept the thoughts of yourself feeling bad

I've heard you say many times
That you're better than no one
And no one is better than you
If you really believe that
You know you have
Nothing to win and nothing to lose
From fixtures and forces and friends
Your sorrow does stem
That hype you and type you
And making you feel
That you gotta be just like them.

I'd forever talk to you
But soon my words
Would turn into a meaningless ring
And deep in my heart
I know there's no help I can bring
Everything passes
Everything changes
Just do what you think you should do
And someday, maybe
Who knows, baby
I'll come and be cryin' to you.

My dad died this morning. He adored Sinead's interpretation of this song. We'll be playing it for him at his funeral.

As a grumpy old Dylan fan, in my opinion very rarely does a cover get anywhere near the original. But this is very good indeed!

I have always loved this Bob Dylan song but this rendition made me cry a river. So beautiful!

This was my brothers favourite version and we played it at his funeral last week. Wonderfully apt lyrics for his too short troubled life. RIP Michael.

I have difficulty carrying a tune in a basket but I must say that the person who wrote the score for the guitar(s) in this rendition is a genius. Blends like frothed milk in cappuccino with Sinead's incredible voice! This song has been one of my favourites of all of Bob Dylan's songs. I have been listening to Bob Dylan since the early 1960s on my parent's tiny transistor radio on a shelf of our tar paper shack in northern Saskatchewan. Between 3:00 am and 6:00 am I could catch radio waves bouncing off the ionosphere from radio stations in New York City and Chicago while I waited for the house to warm up when the mercury read minus 45 F.

Adding to all the superlatives re the lyrics and the interpretation by Sinead, simply put it is out of this world, no other way of expressing it. Wish she was still singing !, thank you Sinead enjoy the new life you have chosen.

Exquisite. I first heard this on Terry Wogan's breakfast show as I drove to work. It continued as I parked and I simply couldn't tear myself away. Arrived on time; got to my desk late.

This version of Dylan’s song, to me, is amazing. It is so sad, yet uplifting. It needs playing over and over. The melody is relatively simple but the words are so complex! Lovely version, lovely voice, lovely lady. Thank you !!
