I hope this tutorial helps you get the kind of speckles you want in your yarn! All products used were bought from Dharma Trading (dye, citric acid, urea) and Amazon (salt shakers, spray bottles, kettle, coffee grinder, funnel, extra wide plastic wrap, 3 tier steamer).

I've done the salt shaker method before. You can get citric acid powder in the canning section of most grocery stores. That way, you don't have to use a coffee grinder. My speckles come out perfect every time.

You are all the awesome! I do speckles by spooning out a half teaspoon of dry dye then placing a small metal sieve over the dye container and dumping the dye into the sieve. Then I can tap the sieve over the yarn and dump the rest of the dye back in the dye container.

This was a great tutorial. Wish this had existed about 6 months ago, before I started making speckle mud.

Great video and thanks for showing the knitted up swatches. A little speckling goes a long long way. I have to remember that because I'm an over-doer extraordinaire!

Thank you ! I have beautiful skeins of natural cream alpaca & merino that I want to get just a very small amt of speckling into for a specific shawl -I did dye my handspun 25 years ago ; before lots of little hands, hot water and chemicals around kitchen didn’t mix. Now, I have these gorgeous new dyes and couldn’t find how to achieve but a few new techniques at home . This video had exactly what I was looking for - Considering that Indie dyers make monthly announcements when they’ll have stock ready for sale ;and they literally are sold out at $30 + a skein in just a few hours ; I’m thrilled to be able to create exactly what I want anytime and for far less expense 👍🏻 Most of the very popular dyers started out in their home kitchens and still produce there now : By sharing the how to on public forum, anyone wanting to explore can :) Thank you !

Brilliant! I kept wondering why I’d not seen anyone use the little salt cellars. Didn’t think about the need to grind the CA. Thanks so much for this.

Thanks for sharing! I just bought some yarn and dye to try out making my own stuff, and I'm super excited to get started. But I sure don't want to make a mess since it was super expensive to get started.

Wow! Really fantastic! I’ve been looking all over for a really concise tutorial on speckled effects! I thank You very much.
May I ask about the steaming process? It looks sooo much easier than all the water pots and things. Sometimes I’m just not in the mood for all the pots

Wow - what a great tutorial!! Thank you so much. One question - was the last skein wet or dry? I am assuming slightly damp as the color looked to be absorbing with the salt shaker method. The knitted up swatches were a huge help!!! I know you put a lot of time and effort into this - thank you again.

Awesome, Nicole! Can't wait to do the stovetop spaghetti pot dyeing (as I think of it) in your recent video and then spray bottle speckle! Just one question... How does the sequence from the kettle dyeing to the speckling go with spray bottle speckling? Are these completely different steps (with the yarn dried in between)? Thanks, hon!

This is a great tutorial! Thank you! One question: In the methods where you say to steam, how is that done? I'm picturing the way one would steam vegetables, with some sort of colander-in-a-pot-of-water. . . Is it like that?

I Love the first method.. came out real pretty. Did I miss something? Did you turn the skein over and speckle? Was the heat on low all the time you were doing this.. thought I saw some steam. Thank you Nicole.. your simple explanations help me a lot!
