Meet Phyllis Smith as Sadness in INSIDE OUT

In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all—inside the mind.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

I really like how they don't make sadness a bad emotion to have. Everyone needs a good cry to release their emotions and cope with stress

Phyllis lives in my town. I work at her favorite restaurant and she's the sweetest person ever! She always chats with all the employees, remembers our names, and is happy to take photos! Love her!

I really love how Pixar incorporated Phyllis' facial features into the character design of Sadness. It's really cute!

Phyllis Smith is an awesome actress. I've been watching on OA on Netflix and she is amazing. Kind of surprised, because she's usually in comedy, but she shows an unbelievable range in drama too.

Love how Phyllis Smith's personality follows her characters around. In "The Office" she was typically down, or at least very quiet. In this movie, she plays the abstract emotion of sadness, and in "Bad Teacher" she played a nervous, middle-aged teacher

Being sad also means you could have a feeling of compassion or remorse.  Sadness is not always a negative emotion.

I love how sentimental her voice is, with this sharp hint of hyper awareness and sarcasm. Uh it's great, she was by far the most surreal office character not counting Creed Bratton played by Creed Bratton.
