Learn the difference between SUBJECTS and OBJECTS in this English grammar lesson for beginners. The subject is who or what does the action in a sentence. An object is the person or thing that receives the action in a sentence. It's important to understand the difference in order to construct grammatically correct sentences in English.

Example:
The boy eats oatmeal every morning.
In this sentence, the subject is the boy. He is the one DOING or performing the action of eating. The object in this sentence is the oatmeal. The oatmeal is receiving the action.

You can identify the subject by asking "who" or "what" performs the action. You can identify the object by asking "whom" or "what" the action is being done to.

Excellent explanation! My native language is Spanish and I think this topic is easier in English than in Spanish.

I happened to watch your video lesson on Subject Object. It was enlightening to all who strive to improve the language. There was slip, as far as I understand grammar concepts, made by you when you gave an example sentence for an object: The cat climbed the tree, and you named the tree in the sentence as an object. I think, from the point of view of the grammar, it is an ADVERB. Would you mind clarifying the point if I am wrong for the benefit of other readers as well as me?

I object to subject they..."They play the guitar"...there is not room on a guitar for they.
