Observing Sea Urchins In The Dark

Check out these incredible sea urchins captured in the dark during a night dive at Malpelo! Super cool! I love how they look blueish black in the dark and the way they are so active and wiggle. Malpelo Island is the tip, the summit of a massive underwater mountain range. That gorgeous pinnacle underwater provides an essential feeding station, cleaning station, and home for many reef dwellers who service their pelagic counter parts when they come by. Night Diving is not technically allowed at Malpelo, but we created an opportunity to do a dawn dive while the darkness was still out. As we dove, the sun rose, and the light changed. Quite a cool and adventurous diving experience. Highlight despite the early morning!
