I do admit I’m really happy that government space companies are willing to take such a risk.

One of the biggest issues with James Webb, it's building and testing such a sophisticated Space Telescope designed to operate in L2, in Earth's Gravity. That's why bigger Space Stations in LEO, that would work as assembly lines of satellites are very important for Space exploration.

10 billion US dollars spent for over 20-30 years of development is almost nothing compared to the yearly (!) budget of the US defensive system, US Navy, military, etc. People in the US constantly cry over NASA's spending while it's almost a miracle how they (NASA) can even launch a rocket due to their budget and doing science at its peak for decades. In fact, people should admire them (NASA) and be proud of what they can do together with other space agencies (ESA, JPL, etc.) all around the globe. So if there are issues and if that means the delay, be it. Better get everything right, be prepared. And if we consider the possibilities of what JWST can discover, it is worth the risk and every single dollar. :)

After all this time and money I choose optimism, It'll launch and perform flawlessly and be as revolutionary as the Hubble was

After watching this video I’m even more concerned but I hope this project goes well.

I think everyone had fingers crossed during launch

I would say Apollo 8 was the riskiest space endeavor ever taken... JWST maybe the most expensive and time consuming, but give credit where credit is due.

It's a never ending story. I just hope that it's on it's way before the end of 2021; and that all goes well. We need the year to end on a high.
AS an aside: NASA's budget should be enough that they could built a new telescope like this every couple of years.
$10 billion? The Pentagon can't account for $6TRILLION and no one blinks an eye.

Even if JWST blows up at launch, it is a great achievement!
So much has ALREADY BEEN LEARNED before it even makes it to space.
Even though I hope it all works, would not suprise me if it does not.
That said, look at all that has been revealed during the construction of Webb.
So much opened up right after the single, lengthy Hubble image (6 days?) that the push for NGST (Webb) came into place.
And the cost?
Please!!!
The US wastes far more $ for completely worthless crap and almost no one says anything or cares.
No matter how much Webb coats and regardless whether it works or not, Web has ALREADY achieved success!

A A - to quote Oddball from Kelly’s Heroes, “Stop with the negative waves Moriarty!”
Yes…it is a complex machine and a lot can go wrong, but I choose positive waves! Don’t hit me with them negative waves!

It could fail. But the light it gathers could rewrite cosmology. Worth the risk.

The price does not matter. This is an epoch in space exploration. Thanks for upping my anxiety Jordan. :(

It's never gonna work. It doesn't have to. Like Starliner. Too complicated. Management too complicated. $10B right into corporate pockets. Success!

Three-plus days after a flawless launch, and, so far, all is well. Healthy skepticism is a good thing, but we can "stay angry" for only so long until it starts to sound like we're crying wolf.

It seems there has been a communications glitch between the JWST and the Arieanne. The problem was probably something like this;
JWST: Howdy do there buddy! How's it hangin?
Arieanne: Sacre bleau! Je ne's comprom pas!

I have to disagree with NASA being vulnerable. The reason is simple, bureaucratic agencies only ever suffer temporary setbacks from congress. Congress members come and go, these agencies once established never die, they just bide their time until they can find a soft ear to get them the money that they will inevitably squander.

The sunken cost conundrum. Too much invested to give up so you keep spending and spending

lets hope it works we need something positive to counter all the negative things this planet is in now

I do hope this deploys properly. So many depressing things going on in the world right now. We need something hopeful to succeed.

The latest communication issue had to do with a 100m cable connecting JWST to a laptop. The extremely long cable was losing packets. As soon as the equipment was plugged near the spacecraft everything was OK.
