About the HUNGARIAN Language

There are no difficult language, only lazy people! Otherwise when in Finland I have had a lot of chats (in English) about the similarity of the two languages. THEY ARE NOT SIMILAR AND A FINNISH FELLOW DOES NOT UNDERSTAND A WORD OF HUNGARIAN!

4:02 "szomszéd" and 4:09 "káposzta" both wrong pronunciation. actually the "sz" letter pairs stand for the sound "s" (the way you say it in english) as you see in my name you would pronunce it like "simi" and the simple "s" letter in hungarian alphabet stand for the sound "sh". for example if we write down the word "shake" in hungarian it would be like "séjk" cause "s" is "sh" + "éj" is "a" and "k" is "k(-e)" :)

I see you probably have studied some Polish too. Because when you see an "sz" you pronounce it as an "sh".
Hungarian and Polish have these two characters in common, "s" and "sz", but in Hungarian, unlike in other languages "s" is said as an sh. Pronunciation: shelter->seltör for example.
"Sz", however is pronounced like an "s" sound of english.: super-> szuper.
In Polish it is exactly the opposite. 'S" is an s like in English or an "sz" in Hungarian, and 'sz" is like an sh sound, or "s" in Hungarian
Sziasztok-sysastoc in english (you say it like shyashtoc as it would be like siastok in HUn.)

NNNOOOO it is not finno-ugric. It is HUN- Schitta. We hav more sound common with Turkik than with any other in that sense. The language structure is absolutely on its own.

It is funny to see how we hungarians all argue where our language come from. The fact is we do not know for sure. What makes it uniqe is that we as a tribe while we traveld across asia, even middle east, and europe picked up bits of peaces from everywhere probably we are the most mixed culture on this planet as far as haritage.

Only modern words come from other languages:
TV, radio, atom etc.
All old words came into existence inside the Hungarian language, there isn't Slavic, Turk, Germanic or any other newcomer word, all of it a big stupid lie.

I like the way you're trying to understand the logic behind the language, but in our grammar there are many "exceptions", so you just need to remember those exceptions to speak and write well and "simply" practice the rest. :) Have fun, but: Ne add fel!/Never give up!  if you feel it's too complicated. :)

As for the def. article it is pronounced not an ey but as a "but" sound, that is the vowel in sun or in but. Not an ey, but a sun- or but-sound.
As for the Hungarian belonging to the Finno-Ugric lang. family a very convincing fact is the lack of plural in Hungarian and its language relative Khanty-Mansi (an ethnic group in Russia). (As for other Finno-Ugric languages I don't know for sure). Yes "hal" is fish as you pointed out. Hungarians say 1 hal, 2 hal, 3 hal, 4 hal. The Khanti_Mansis also say 1khal, 2 khal, 3 khal etc.(or somehing like that for hal). Why not 1 khal, 2 khalak, 3 khalak See 1 fish, 2 fishes, 3 fishes like in Indo-European languages.

It's almost an acceptable presentation of hungarien :) But you are right: it's comletly different from the most of other languages. Do not believe the clichés and try to think hungarien. Good luck!

My girlfriend is Hungarian, I've been try to learn it for over 8 years and I still don't understand the grammar.
