For anyone who is confused on why he was still happy while getting arrested it’s bc he still felt accomplished for being the first man to survived cold temperatures all while being 16, 000 feet in the air and controlling his descending fall by shoot his DIY ballon parachute with a BB gun even though he would be arrested for breaking multiple aviation laws💀

The funny thing is he actually wasnt charged woth anything initially and it took them a few days to figure out exactly what laws he had broken. It ended up being like obstruction of peace and unlicensed flight

An identical story but with a tragic ending happened in Brazil in April 20, 2008, where the priest Adelir de Carli carried out a flight with several helium balloons through the skies of the state of Paraná. Data says that he did this to attract attention and raise funds for a road ministry, which helped truck drivers.
Unfortunately, the idea didn't work out, and he was presumed dead after disappearing. His remains were found 3 months later on the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The cause of death was hypothermia.
The case became known as "the balloon priest", or "o padre do balão" in Portuguese

Forgot a few pieces of info here. His launch anchor chord broke prematurely and made him go to the restricted air space instead of over the Mojave desert apparently. Then, after he shot a few balloons he dropped the gun and slowly descended into a power line, broke it and caused a black out 😂😂

For those who doesn’t know
This is something like how you go up to the sky when you are mostly up closer to space and you can get most cold or like freezing to make you sick or anything that could hurt you The notion that somebody would instantly freeze if they were exposed to space is actually a myth. It turns out that a vacuum actually is a very good insulator. So if you were floating around in space it would actually take a very long time for your body to cool off. Of course, being exposed to the vacuum would cause your blood to boil and many more grotesque things that would kill you quickly.

In terms of whether there is a distance from the sun where the sun's radiation would cancel out any cooling, that is absolutely the case. Of course, if you were that close, the solar radiation would damage your body very quickly. Well hopefully you exhale your breath as you do this because otherwise the air you are holding in your lungs will create a great deal of pressure on the inside of your body and cause a great deal of damage. So assuming you exhale, you are now without oxygen, you can breath normally but 'nothing' is going in and out of your lungs so you will have only a few minutes before the lack of oxygen kills you. But before that kills you, the essentially non existent pressure of space will cause you to get decompression sickness 'the bends' ie the nitrogen in your blood is becoming a gas. But before that kills you will experience the unusual sensation of any exposed liquid of your body boiling off, not that because it's hot, but that the pressure is so low. You'd feel your saliva boiling off your tongue, fluid from your eyes (if they are open), and from your nose and lungs. You experience some swelling of the body due the low pressure but you won't live long enough to get the 'ballooning' effect which would make you look like a body builder by the time it's done. Also the sun will be burning any exposed flesh, but not sci fi flesh burning and flaking, more like quickly getting a sunburn type of effect. The cold would actually not be an issue because there is no air to cool you down by convection, so you'd cool done by infrared radiation, a much much slower process. Doubt you'd lose any meaningful heat by the time you died. So asphyxiation is the main thing that will kill you in a few minutes, though if picked up before that time is up you have a good chance of surviving. (The earlier the better.)

The man was Larry Walters who did this in 1982. He got widespread attention for that but once the fame died down, he struggled to find a job and even broke up with his girlfriend of 15 years. In 1993, he shot himself in the heart and died
