Adding Logs to My Raised Beds to Hold Water

I add logs to my raised beds to hold water because it gets hot here in California. This helps my plants last through the high heat and dry summers. If you do this too, I would love to hear about it in the comments!

Thanks for watching!

I love this idea - I'm having a "why didn't I think of this" moment... 😆👍

I did this in four of my raised beds. So far, it's working well.

Love it, we are using the hugel method this year in the UK, we have been growing for 6 years and have noticed the change in temperatures and the moving of the seasons, storing water in the summer is now an issue, and that's in the UK, we are under water at the moment but summers are getting hot. Love the channel, keep it up.

This is an excellent method. My raised beds are 32" deep with a layer of 8"-12" logs & sticks at the base. Last year no irrigation and the soil 1" below the surface remained moist. It truely works. That and the depth of the beds.

Hi, great idea regarding the holes in the logs. I was going to use freshly cut tree branches etc so drilling holes in them would probaly speed up the rotting process and retain water, awesome thanks .

I dice mine up with a chainsaw to get rid of the big gaps and mix in a bunch of green (fresh glass clippings). I also use a lot of twigs.

Building 3 new raised beds 30" or 32" high this spring. Will have to remember this. One bed I am putting some 5 gallon water jugs, 5 gallon food grade buckets with covers from restaraunts and two 50 gallon water barrels that are food grade also. I want to be strictly organic so it could be a bad idea. I'm a DAV and it will be hard enough for me building these beds, let alone going out looking for logs, dragging them out of the woods, and then lugging them home to fill the beds when it would be much easier for me to just use buckets and such. Is this a good idea? Please let me know your opinion, thanks

Any guess how long it would take to break down the logs? Couple months? Year or more? Thank you for the informative video!!
