The International Day of Non-Violence is observed in honor of Mahatma Gandhi, the pioneer of the principle of non-violence. Gandhi helped lead India to independence, effecting social and political change without the use of physical force. Believing the soul to be the greatest power in the world and peace its highest expression, Gandhi advocated for self-mastery to attain “peace, calm, and goodwill that protects and fortifies ourselves and blesses others around us.”
