It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if it was a toxic environment. I’m from a neighboring county next to Navarro and I’ve been slammed against a wall and choked by a former coach in the past for bailing on a final tumbling pass due to asthma and having 3 back-to-back tumbling passes and we still won, by the way, so it didn’t even matter much that I bailed in the big scheme of things. I was only 11, so I was VERY shocked and horrified. I quit cheer after that season ended and moved onto to diving in high school, where my coach and I had a great relationship, full of jokes and excitement over new dives that I’d learn. My dive coach could get irritated by me, as all coaches do, but never in a toxic way.

As an adult who is still actively coaching and participating in competitive cheerleading, this is so disappointing. Not that they were in a relationship obviously, but that Gabi did blackface and claimed she didn't know what she was doing. Cheerleaders already have such a stereotype attached to them as dumb b*tches, and that's why I was so excited when Cheer came out on Netflix, hoping people could really see how it's as much as sport as anything else and our athletes might finally see some of the respect they deserve. But then the situation with Jerry happened, and now hearing that Monica allegedly said it "wasn't that bad, " a sentiment that was really obvious in season two when she never just outright condemned Jerry on the show. I know there are awful people in every sport but it's so sad that a team highlighted to represent the cheer community wound up being so toxic.
