Does God Punish Sin?

In this video, Jason Hernberg shows how Christ in the Old Testament overthrows the "God doesn't punish sin" doctrine by examining the Bible story found in Numbers 25:1-5. Watch as we explore how Christ, through Moses, through the children of Israel, executed the punishment of God against those who had sinned, and how Ellen White solidifies the idea that God used his people to punish wicked nations. We'll also look at whether there was any injustice done by God in handling the issue the way he did.

GOD DESTROYS NO MAN; but when a man stifles conviction, when he turns from evidence, he is sowing unbelief, and will reap as he has sown. - RH, February 17, 1891 par. 2.

Understanding this EGW wrote explicitly that God is not to be regarded as waiting to punish sinners, but sin brings its own punishment, just as Scripture teaches—the wages of sin is death, sin when full grown brings forth death…

Sin sows the seeds of its own destruction. A sinner's wickedness calls for a cup of bitterness and evil that will burn his soul and destroy his being. All who do wrong reward themselves with evil, not good. - 4BC 114

Jer 2:19 Your own evil will punish you, and your turning from me will condemn you. You will learn how bitter and wrong it is to abandon me, the LORD your God, and no longer to remain faithful to me. I, the Sovereign LORD Almighty, have spoken."

YES
I praise and thank Almighty God for my life in this world, I thank You Father for all Your teachings, through my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and I thank You for all blessings, gifts and provision in all things. I thank You LORD in faith and trust for whatever my final judgement will bring upon me, I can only pray that will be a crown in Heaven for I never presume how You LORD see me. Thankyou LORD for your plan of redemption and the chances you give to all who would follow Jesus. Thankyou Lord Jesus for Your ultimate sacrifice for the sinners and the wretched such as I. In the Holy Name of Jesus I pray with thanks, with praise, and in love always, AMEN 🙏❤️‍🔥

Thank you, Brother Jason. As to your request:
I praise and thank God for having such an amazing amount of patience towards me, and for opening my eyes to the truth. I can now see that the horrible things which happened to me were for my own good, and while I caused them to happen because of my exceedingly godless and sinful lifestyle, I can see that God used these disasters to drive me away from sin and towards Himself, and years later I can see that these disasters were the major turning points in my life.

God bless. Great quotes. But today, we do not use carnal weapons, the true church would live by the principles of God, would disfellowship - those idolaters.

What do you think when you hear preachers preaching that God, in order to be just, must punish sin? This is Satan’s argument; this is the voice of God’s adversary!

We are not to regard God as waiting to punish the sinner for his sin. THE SINNER BRINGS PUNISHMENT UPON HIMSELF. HIS OWN ACTIONS START A TRAIN OF CIRCUMSTANCES THAT BRING THE SURE RESULT. Every act of transgression reacts upon the sinner, works in him a change of character, and makes it more easy for him to transgress again. By choosing to sin, men SEPARATE THEMSELVES FROM GOD, cut themselves off from the channel of blessing, and THE SURE RESULT IS RUIN AND DEATH. - 1888 1576.1

2 Corinthians 3:14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which [vail] is done away in Christ.

GOD MEASURES MEN BY HIS LAW. THE LAW POINTS OUT HIS JUSTICE.

God measures men by the law which is a transcript of His character. This law points out His justice and benevolence—the attributes which are to be sacredly cherished by those in His service. In the great day of God this law will try every soul. Many now low in man’s estimation will then be seen to stand high in the estimation of God. Then those who have worked with integrity and diligence will be justly rewarded. {Ms 33, 1912, par. 37}

WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND CLEARLY THE DIVINE REQUIREMENTS OF GOD’S LAW.

We need to understand clearly the divine requirements that God makes of His people. The law which is the transcript of His character no one need fail to understand. The words written by the finger of God on tables of stone so perfectly reveals His will concerning His people, that none need make any mistake. The laws of His kingdom were definitely made known to be afterward revealed to the people of all nations and tongues as the principles of His government. We would do well to study those laws recorded in the twentieth chapter of Exodus. {Ms 117, 1908, par. 17}

When the judgment shall sit, and the books shall be opened, and every man shall be judged according to the things written in the books, then the tables of stone, hidden by God until that day, will be presented before the world as the standard of righteousness. Then men and women will see that the terms of their salvation is obedience to the perfect law of God. None will find excuse for sin. By the righteous principles of that law, men will receive their sentence of life or of death. {Ms 117, 1908, par. 18}

IT IS NECESSARY TO HAVE A KNOWLEDGE OF GOD AND HIS LAW.

Those who study this lesson aright will see that in order to keep the law it is necessary to have a knowledge of God; for the law is a transcript of His character, and His character is love. Moses prayed, “I beseech Thee, show me Thy glory. And He said, I will make all My goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee.” “And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.” [Exodus 33:18, 19; 34:6.] {Ms 109, 1906, par. 15}

WE ARE TO STUDY WHAT THE LAW OF HEAVEN IS TO US.

Well, now, here we are to evidence that love in keeping the commandments of God. We are not to be indifferent. We are to know and search the Scriptures, and to know what saith the Scriptures in regard to the commandments of God, and then we are to obey them. We are not to study our convenience in the matter, but we are to study what is the law of heaven to us. What does God desire of us? What are the laws of His kingdom? Why, His law is the transcript of His character, and we are to obey His character. We are to imitate the glory of God, and unless we do, we cannot live with Him in the kingdom of glory. No, we cannot do that. We must obey the law of God, and the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. You find out where that reads, and then in the Psalms, and then you consider how much is said about obedience to God. {Ms 188, 1903, par. 17}

HOLD FORTH THE WORD OF LIFE, WARNING MEN OF THE BINDING CLAIMS OF GOD’S LAW.

Believers are to shine as lights in the world. And by His example Christ has shown us that believers can best do the work required of them when their vital energies are organized in church fellowship. Christians are to stand out distinct from the world as God’s standard-bearers, showing in their lives the influence of the transforming grace of Christ. They are raised up together to sit with Christ in heavenly places, that they may reveal to the world, to angels, and to men an enduring representation of the eternal world. They are to hold forth the Word of life, warning men of the binding claims of God’s law. God wants His servants to be of a high order. He wants them to obey laws of a higher order than the laws of the world—laws which are the transcript of His character. {Lt 199, 1899, par. 14}

IT IS ESSENTIAL TO OUR ETERNAL WELL-BEING TO KNOW MORE OF GOD.

Love to God depends on a conception of His goodness, His excellence, and a knowledge of His will. It requires an appreciation of His character. It is essential to our eternal well-being to know more of God. His law is the transcript of His character, and to disregard this law is to connect with those of whom Paul declares, “They did not like to retain God in their knowledge, ” because they wished to use their God-given powers in self-service. [Romans 1:28.] {Ms 163a, 1898, par. 6}

BE DOERS OF THE WORD AND BUILD UP CHARACTERS AFTER CHRIST.

Let those who suppose themselves to be men act, not like fractious children, but like men who have grown out of the petty, querulous habits of children, who no longer think and speak like children, but, having become men, have put away childish things, and think as men in the sight of God. Those who read God’s Word, taking it as their counsellor, and becoming doers of the Word, are building up characters after the divine similitude. They are obeying God’s law which is the transcript of His character. {Ms 160a, 1898, par. 7}

THE MOST PRECIOUS TRUTHS WERE CONCERNING THE LAW OF GOD.

The most precious truths were concerning the law of God. The great standard of character was to be lifted up from beneath the feet of men, and made to become just what God intended it should be, the transcript of His character. It is eternal truth—truth which cannot be changed or annulled. The truth, made an outcast was lifted it its rightful position, to the throne of the Infinite. Christ proved Himself to be the Word and the wisdom of God. When this work is done, the book supposed to be sealed sheds forth its bright rays of light which have been unheeded and unseen. A flood of light is poured forth upon the rejoicing faithful ones. In the last times, children’s voices will be heard as when Christ in His childhood was in the temple, solving mysteries which priest and rulers had not discerned. Children in their simplicity will speak words which will be an astonishment to men who now talk of “higher education.” {Ms 53, 1898, par. 11}

CHRIST JESUS OUR PATTERN.

The Saviour of the world would have his co-laborers represent him; and the more closely a man walks with God, the more faultless will be his manner of address, his deportment, his attitude, and his gestures. Coarse and uncouth manners were never seen in our Pattern, Christ Jesus. He was a representative of Heaven, and his followers must be like him. {CE 241.2}

CHRIST IS TAKEN AS OUR PATTERN IN ALL THINGS.

All who have the mind of Christ will turn away from everything tending to deformity of character. If Christ is taken as our pattern in all things, if he is formed within, “the hope of glory, ” our minds will be filled with thoughts that are pure and lovely. We shall feel no inclination to think or to talk of the failings of others, or to triumph over the knowledge of a brother’s error. Mercy and love will be cherished; that charity which “suffereth long and is kind, ” which “beareth all things” and “thinketh no evil, ” will appear in word and action. {RH February 16, 1897, par. 12}

CHRIST IS OUR PATTERN, GIVEN US TO FOLLOW.

Christ is our Pattern, the perfect and holy example that has been given us to follow. We can never equal the Pattern; but we may imitate and resemble it according to our ability. When we fall, all helpless, suffering in consequence of our realization of the sinfulness of sin; when we humble ourselves before God, afflicting our souls by true repentance and contrition; when we offer our fervent prayers to God in the name of Christ, we shall as surely be received by the Father as we sincerely make a complete surrender of our all to God. We should realize in our inmost soul that all our efforts in and of ourselves will be utterly worthless, for it is only in the name and strength of the Conqueror that we shall be overcomers. {Ms 65, 1894, par. 7}

CHRIST NEVER KILLED ANYONE.

Herod and the wicked authorities killed the Just One, but Christ never killed anyone, and we may attribute the spirit of persecution—because men want liberty of conscience—to its origin—Satan. He is a deceiver, a liar, a murderer, and accuser of the brethren. He loves to see human misery. He exults in distress, and as we view the cruel persecutions of those who would obey God according to the dictates of their own consciences, we may know that this is the mystery of iniquity. The Lord said to Satan, that old serpent, “It [the Seed of the woman] shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His heel.” Genesis 3:15. Christ in a special manner bruised the head of the serpent, but the prophecy is far-reaching. It is a declaration of an unwearied conflict between Christ and His followers, and Satan and his angels and human agencies on this earth, to the close of time. {Ms 62, 1886, par. 64}

Matthew 5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
