You know, I too find it a nice pleasant touch of Nomura to show Roxas's connection to Sora by how similar they are in not only in wielding a keyblade, but also in their subconscious physical actions. Walking, Running, hanging off the edge, pulling themselves up, and even how they fight with one keyblade.

Though Roxas's guard is better as Sora was trying to cover his whole body with his keyblade in KH 1, hence the two handed guard. Roxas howeveer is older and stronger than that, so he can do it one handed. Especially with all the experience his body has from his time in Organization XIII killing heartless on missions to collect hearts. Roxas may not remember it during his time in Data Twilight Town, but his body still has that experience and deep in his heart he still has that chain of memories in him. Hence why he could use two keyblades so well as he does against Axel.

I always kind of noticed how similar Roxas' movements and animations were to Sora's, but I never noticed how eerily identical they were, it's amazing, lol.

“I am me, Nobody else!”
Well sure seems like Sora to me :/

I love how they give Roxas the flaming shoes when he walks on the fire wall during the reaction commands. It just looks so cool and shows the amount of detail they put since this is a one of fight and this is exclusive to Roxas unless sora does it in the data battle against axel

Holding the keyblades behind his back is similar to the stance of Valor Form as Sora 2:42. I loved the idea of bringing Sora’s gameplay for comparison and I hope you do the same with all the characters in future and not only Sora. Love the video, keep up the good work 🔥

I miss the boss specific reaction commands in kh2. I wish they would have been implemented in kh3 in some way, like blocking a certain enemy attack or doing a perfect block that triggers a reaction/situation command.

aside from Roxas being my favorite character in the Kingdom Hearts series I’ve always loved how the developers put a lot of detail into his different psychological ‘stages.’ By that I mean for one in the beginning of Kingdom Hearts 2 his combat and mannerisms are that of KH1 Sora’s just like Bio stated in this video. It bridges the gap between the first two games think of Roxas as Sora’s virtual puberty. This is because his memories being practically hidden hinder his true potential rendering him an exact carbon copy shell of his younger counterpart, are y’all following me yet? Ok moving on.

During his dive to the heart against the twilight thorn the reaction commands and his ability to fend for himself in an unfamiliar situation are all subconscious. The abilities are buried deep and activated through that trauma of being approached by the darkness hence the twilight Thorn. At this stage Roxas’s muscle memory, connection to the light (and dark) and bits of his memory are starting to resurface without him realizing it. Now one of my favorite moments in Kingdom Hearts history! The boss fight against Axel. Honesty y’all don’t even know how pumped I was as a kid the very FIRST time I got up to that part. The adrenaline, emotion and outright epic ness was to much for my 9 year old brain omg lmaooo but getting off topic. Roxas pulling the Oblivion and Oath keeper out of nowhere is a visual mechanic/aesthetic manifestation of him finally reaching his true self but what amazes me is it’s STILL not him at his most powerful. Him finally remember remembering axel was a ‘trigger’ in a sense.

The combat and the sequence of events from a story perspective show you that his heart awakened in that moment and he purposely by accident (I know that sounds funny but if you think about it it makes more sense than you think) summoned his weapons from the confines of his heart. His combos with the blades are not of his organization status because at that point in the game his body was pretty much rusty with the flow of his power but it was ‘active’ if you catch what I’m saying. He swings the oathkeeper and oblivion around like an amateur but shows just enough skill to display the attacks he did. When Roxas fights Sora in the dive to the heart you can see him handle the keyblades like a master the dude fucking throws the keyblades around like yo-yos are you kidding me!! Also the reaction command when he baths the floor with light using axels body (someone needs fo come get me cause I’m loosing my shit right now just thinking about how cool that is) are glimpse of his ability with light! Another reason why he doesn’t fight like his organization self is because he is in denial in a sense and also in my opinion doesn’t have a much of his power due to Sora’s distortion and restoration in the sleep pods.

Also for those who may need a further example as to why Roxas doesn’t fight the way he usually does think of Star Wars and how certain abilities are exclusive to those of the dark side and those of the light side. Darkness usually tantalizes a more aggressive and raw form of fighting not to say Roxas didn’t have that cause he’s literally split down the middle of light and dark but during his fight with Axel he wasn’t fighting to kill he fought to prove his independence. Just like any human or real life being the mental is serious thing of a person questions who and what they are all the while being totally oblivious to their true nature wether it be consciously or subconsciously you CANNOT unlock your true potential! So to sum it all up even thought it may not seem that serious to most people the transition from Roxas being a total scrub in the beginning to progressing into his true self over the course of the game has got to be one of the most ingenious visual innovations in a video game I have ever seen from so many different standpoints! To the entire staff of the KH2 team ESPECIALLY the writing staff you will forever hold a place in my personal hall of fame. We thank you!

Also, the combo finisher for Roxas with one keyblade is the same as Ven's. Where Sora spins to the right, Roxas spins to the left, the same way Ven does with his finisher.

Another similarity is Roxas’ finisher is the same as Sora’s “Vortex” ability in KH1 ;D

I think roxas’ animations look different at first is because kh1 has a much smaller field of view. I really wish 1.5 fixed that 😩 kh2, 3d and kh3 have the perfect camera distance
