What do I do with items sold that I don't have a receipt for, i.e have had for years at home or inherited? Just put 0 for cost?

I'd rather list currently unsold items as expenses, rather than only deduct the cost of items that have already sold!

Thanks for this video! I have a big closet full of NWT clothing, accessories, and NIB shoes purchased over many years that I am looking to sell.
How do I handle ‘cost of goods’ for my bookkeeping? Do I estimate, or dig through a huge box of receipts and find the actual cost of each item? I already paid taxes on these purchases, so isn’t it being taxed twice when I sell it? Cost of goods wasn’t $0. The bookkeeping/spreadsheet organization is so overwhelming it’s keeping me from starting. TIA

Hi Casey. I'm confused by sales tax. Ebay collects. Do I include that in total sale price? Do I need a sales tax column?

That's helpful. It's similar for what I use for my employer. I have a question about platform fees. Are you doing all inclusive for all fees? If so which ones. I would consider ad, label, insertion. But it can get tricky when you get a return. Can you show how you account for that? Is it separate or at the bottom of the sheet? Our line by line does it at the bottom as we go. But when you do combined shipping and have to give a shipping adjustment we keep that there as well. We aren't that busy with orders so I currently do everything. But if I sold 40 packages a day I would never get anything done. And I can't trust just checking my solds because eBay does not consistently show what we sold. And for personal recurring expenses like office rent/ home expenses, and mileage are they kept track of on the same spreadsheet off to the side?

Okay... So I have a question... On the COG. I don't see where you have a column for the actual cost of the item. Wouldn't you need a column for that in order to get the COG? OR did you lump the actual cost of the item being sold, into the "Price Sold" Column?? Thanks in Advance!!

You know what gets me messed up .. is huge lots i buy in which half sell for cash on marketplace and other half sells on ebay if your not paying taxes on half of what you just sold cause you sold them through marketplace how do you caculate profits with the other half you sell on ebay for instance especially if forexample i buy $500 lot. Sell $500 of said inventory through non taxable sales and then lets say 200 on ebay. Wouldnt it show that i had a loss rather than a profit please help me understand this

Quick question. So im paying tax on some items i buy at thrift stores, im assuming i should add that into my cost of goods? And the same thing with expenses, if i paid tax on it i should add that in to get my total expense of an item? Thanks :)

Hi Casey, question. If I bought say $3, 000 of inventory this year and did not sell all of it, at the end of the year for example say my total gross sales is $6, 000 can I just deduct the full $3, 000 of inventory I spent and say I profited $3, 000 (not including the labels/etc) ? Or should I deduct each individual item? Thank you

So I started reselling in April 2022 and I did great for the first 6 months but then I got busy as a teacher and I had to, for my own sanity, put it on the back burner. I restarted in May 2023 should I just start from scratch, referring to all my inventory. I have been reselling to consignment stores and I am going to donate to my local shelters. But for my cost of good spreadsheet do I start from 0 or estimate what I have left? Trying to use my time wisely.
