I would add that I want every new car to have tilting exterior mirrors while in reverse. It’s really good for parallel parking, or just backing up in general, because the mirrors are pointed right at the curb or parking lines.

And the 8th cool feature: Dealerships not charging a 20% markup on new cars because of supply chain shortages.

My top 5 are:
HUD (Heads up display)
Ventilated seats
Keyless entry
Built in dash camera
Dedicated climate controls

What about the ability to lower all vehicle windows with one push of button Doug? You loved that feature!!

Seven features that I want on my new car:
1. A full-size spare tire that matches other tires
2. Error codes and explanation, instead of "check engine" light
3. GPS Navigation display behind the steering wheel instead of at the side
4. Speedometer, fuel gauge, tachometer, voltmeter, oil pressure, water temp, transmission temp, heading indicator, clock, displays always on
5. Radio/entertainment, heater/AC knobs and switches
6. Freestanding 5 mph bumpers
7. Engine where an average person do easily basic maintenance (oil change, sparkplugs, air filter).

i have a big one.
an electrically heated windshield.
this is one of the best features in colder climates period.
ford has this as an option for about a decade now.
every auto maker should have this.

It's interesting to see these features are family oriented. Makes sense now that Doug is a dad. I wonder what happens when Doug gets older and his mobility changes. Could we see geriatric Doug talk about features that benefit older drivers?

Or maybe sooner...?

One thing I want to see less of: gloss black interior surfaces. They attract fingerprints, they look bad when they're dusty and if the sun hits them at the right/wrong angle it's blinding.

My favorite feature is something I've only seen on the Audi Q5, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Volkswagen Atlas, a spray nozzle jet for the rear view camera so you don't have to clean it yourself when it gets dirty. super helpful with all the salt on the roads now! VW/Audi also has so many cool technologies for safety that I hope also make it to other brands, it's so weird how there's still such a difference in safety between different cars.

The biggest feature new cars are missing is just simply buttons. I can’t stand touch screens especially if I’m wearing gloves. Seat warmers especially.

One thing you missed: Being able to open the car door to any position and the door holding it there! Like in some Panameras(?) I think. So useful in tight parking spaces!

The "night mode" feature that SAABs used to have. One button and all dash lights went out save for the speedometer and then anything else (low fuel, etc) only as needed.

The matrix headlights which dim/turn off the part of the beam which dazzles oncoming vehicles/cyclists etc would be great to have in all cars.

Minor correction: Tesla records CONSTANTLY. This is important because by the time you need it, the incident could be over. It saves and alerts you when an incident is triggered or if you choose to do so manually.

I would add a HUD to this list. I love the HUD in my Q7. So great to see the speedo there without having to look down. Plus different vehicles that have them integrate other info into the HUD as well. It would be great if CarPlay could have access to the HUD as well to overlay navigation info (upcoming turns, etc.).

Considering my newest vehicle is 17 years old the only thing I can think of is all the things that will break and essentially total the car as it costs more to fix than the car will be worth. To be honest I miss when you could buy “stripped cars” manual transmission, manual locks, roll down windows, etc.

1 easy way to sit down into the car no limbo in and out
2 manual windows they work all the time no matter what
3 a cell phone for a car that has signal everywhere you go stick your cameras and apps for when you figured out great cell reception anywhere
4 one big volume knob no nonsense hidden in buttons displays and delayed start menus
5 long range 3000km +
6 a clock. Hard to believe in this day n age
7 bumper cars so you don’t need smash repair

Bless

Even Doug’s “filler” videos when he’s on vacation, or taking a week off are always informative and excellent. Thank you Doug!

I'll add my now/future wish list, as an adjunct to this:
- Phone control via bluetooth, to "act as a key" without requiring cloud-originated commands to the car
- Ability to have the car provide power while off indefinitely, especially for PHEV/EV ("camping mode")
- "Safe by default" autonomous systems (ie: don't disable the self-driving and crash if the driver looks away too long, cause that's idiotic)
- Two-way power deliver for EV's (ie: Ford Lightning's ability to serve as a home backup battery while connected)
- Some solution to government data collection/access (so people can buy new tech without compromising privacy in horrible ways)
