As notable as the original version was ground breaking, Ray Charles’ cover of The Beatles "Eleanor Rigby" is a pop classic. From his 1968 album A Portrait Of Ray, Charles’ soulful version would influence Aretha Franklin to recording a year later. This is the first time this track has been made officially available in over a decade.

In celebration of Ray Charles’ 90th birthday, Tangerine Records, the label he founded in 1962, is proud to announce the release of “True Genius” the ultimate Ray Charles collection. Featuring 90 of his greatest songs and most important recordings of his legendary career, this newly remastered set includes all of his biggest hits.

LYRICS:
Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Father McKenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working. Darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong

This is a gem. Ray’s interpretation is brilliant. His vocal cadence in the verses, the chord choices, the background vocals, the strings and oboe, are all perfect. I’m sure the Beatles loved it, also.

Nobody has got squat on the. Enigmatic. Master . He infuses all cover songs with his personal articulated knowledge of music theory adding super tasty jazz passing chords that makes it his brand new take w/0 distortion of the original writers version Ray Charles was big on. Classique taste but more than anything
He was about a distinctive style that is clearly exemplified in evidence of his many many. Albums and the level of creativity is unparalleled nobody has got anything on Ray Charles Robinson

this song has represented a turn in. the history of popular music, there is a "before" and "after" Eleanor Rigby: for the words, for the use of classical instruments, for thinking not of youth but of old people. After this song popular music has been able to become classical, and radical. Ray Charles has created his own soul version, and it's great because of his voice and his soul

Arguably the best cover ever of a Beatles' song and the only one that can compete with the original.
