Also, boba tea was popularized in the west by immigrants. The Taiwanese shops have barely started setting up in the last 10 years while places like Quickly, Tapioca Express, and Kung Fu Tea have been around for much longer.

It's because he's ignorant. BOBA are tapioca pearls. That's a SOUTH AMERICAN originated food-stuff. They have been eating them for hundreds of years in Brazil and make a lot of really great food items, from tapioca pudding to tapioca omelets out of them. We have been eating tapioca (mostly in pudding) in the US since before the Civil War.
