Face transplant recipient Andy Sandness was eager to thank the widow of his donor, Lilly Ross. “He’s got the flush cheeks, and he’s got a little mole on his nose,” Ross remarked, after seeing her dead husband’s face again. Their tearful encounter took place at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where Sandness underwent the hospital’s first-ever face transplant surgery.
