The Memra (Word) of God

How well known in the time of Jesus was the idea that the Word of God is a distinct personality (as Christians believe) that God can send and instruct to do his will? Was this a completely new idea? Or was it well-known to Jesus' contemporaries? You may be surprised to learn the evidence that comes from the Targums (Aramaic translations of the Bible) that the idea of the Word of God as a distinct personality was already very well developed in the time of Jesus.
