Hoover also had no living predecessors by the end of his term, although by the time this happened it was so late in his presidency that FDR was already the president-elect

0:30 People point to this as Grant being this evil slave owner when in reality he never wanted to own him nor did he ever need to

Theodore Roosevelt was also the only living former president when he left office. Benjamin Harrison had died in March 1901, William McKinley was assassinated in September 1901, and Grover Cleveland died in 1908.

grants assessment of Lee is right on target; he did not perform well in his largest offensive battle at Gettysburg ; and after that many of his battles were defensive where he had the advantage of digging in; which required 3 to 1 numbers of attacking Union troops to win the day. He allowed himself to be trapped until too late to escape at Richmond/Petersburg area, which lead to his final surrender. Lee was just one of the Armies of the Confederacy, and is often mistaken for commander of the whole Southern armies, as Grant was commanding in the North. Grant was responsible to develop and execute a complete master plan of all Union Armies to defeat the South; where Lee just had to plan for his Army.

Would love if you did a video on some interesting presidential nominees who didn't end up winning. We all know the presidents but most of us don't know who they beat to get there.

I'm confused. Theodore Roosevelt was the only living president for the final months of his presidency before Taft took over and Herbert Hoover was the only living president for a month before FDR took office. Not as long as Ulysses but there was a brief time

0:21 forgot about General Washington. Still he was 11 years older than Grant when he got into office.

Upon leaving the Presidency, Grant took his wife Julia on a protracted and well deserved tour of Europe. No other American since Benjamin Franklin had received such a universally adulatory reception from the 'old world'.
