Monthly Fees for Remote Start? Toyota Remote Start / Remote Connect.

I hate paying monthly subscriptions for anything, and Toyota just announced that many of their car owners will have to start paying a monthly fee to use the Toyota remote start feature.

No Monthly Fee Home Security Videos:

Starting in 2018 Toyota began providing Toyota Remote Connect as a free 3-year subscription on their new vehicles. That app allows owners to lock and unlock their cars remotely as well as use the Toyota remote start feature. The app pings Toyota, who then sends a signal to the car to execute the command.

Now the Toyota remote start feature was also part of the remote that came with many of their models. The remote's remote start feature connects directly to the in order to start the car. It does not need to go through Toyota's servers.

Now Toyota has announced that in order to use the remote start feature, you must have an active remote connect account. That is, they tied the remote start feature of the car's remote to the app. So without an active remote connect account, the remote start feature of the car's remote will no longer work.

All those cars in 2018 are not beginning to run out of their free trail period and in order to use the remote start features, Toyota owners must sign up and pay for the remote connect app. The current cost of this is $8/month or $80/year.

Starting in 2020 some of the Toyota car models provided a 10-year free account. So those cars will have several years of free use and this will only impact the 2nd or 3rd owners of those vehicles.

As a side note, Most Toyota remotes don't have a remote start button on their remotes. So How do you remote start a Toyota? Using the lock button. Press the lock button three time and the last time hold it for about 3 seconds.

Toyota needs to be shamed 24/7 what kind of bullshit is that and what moron in what board-room thought that was a great idea!!!?? yea that'll ingratiate the company to the customer-base, sure! the people will be just fine with FOREVER paying for their cars -- OUTRAGEOUS is an understatement to what toyota is doing

This was a topic of discussion at Christmas lol
I hate monthly subscriptions as well. Why I won't buy a Toyota for my next vehicle.

I literally turned down the new toyota corolla cross for this exact reason and went with honda hrv instead, I liked the toyota better but I won’t support this kind of practices.

I know toyota thinks not enough people care but at least I did and they lost a sell

We all start filing complaints everywhere we can. BBB. Facebook. This video is great to expose them. Heck next time I am in the dealership I will talk to people looking at new cars and inform them.

And now every Toyota car dealership can make a ton of extra money by selling you a normal remote starter that works in a normal way and doesn't require an app where they're trying to rip you off with extra payments.

I have a 2019 Camry, and I have to get the subscription so my keyfob will do remote start. The key fob range is terrible. 25 feet max. So I use the app a lot. I too live in AZ and have to cool the car. So much better. Thanks for the video.

Just sold my 2017 Lexus RX for this very reason. They didn't tell us about a fee was needed when we bought it new. Had "free" connect for 1 year. Then, we were told we needed the yearly fee. Really? A fee to use a feature I bought & paid for? I then vowed to never buy a Toyota again!

What a wake up call. I woke up to a cold day. Not remote start. Key remote start removed. 1 month of research and calls to find out they want 8$ extra to turn it back on. I bought the car with it. No one explained it was a subscription service, no app involved; key start. What a kick in the balls. Same day I bought a new car, not knowing they were going to squeeze me for an extra 8$ per month.

I’m so pissed I didn’t know about this until after I made the purchase.

Just give people the key fob and stop the shenanigans. For me it's a big factor on whether or not I ever buy another Toyota product.

I'm shopping for a car right now and hearing about this subscription knocks the Highlander off of my list.

Hyundai charges for remote start. It’s currently free for the first three years on new purchases, and secondary purchases in the first three years don’t seem to receive it.

You can still use key fob to remote start once app subscription expires

I'm so bummed, I really wanted this car, I've been looking for just the right one for 6 months now, and was planning to spend $45, 000.00 on a Rav4 Hybrid limited, until i found out about the subscription fee's for the app, that allows you to remote start your car, what a load of BS. No Thanks, I'll look else where

We just bought a 25 Highlander. It's very confusing, but found out that if you allow trial subscriptions, the remote start with both the app and the Key Fob. Found this out on another YouTube video.

Toyota is getting a ton of blow back on this. They may not do this, only because of all the negativity about this.

My opinion is uts highway robbery.

I think when they sale a vehicle, costing as much as they are charging, there should be no fees what so ever as add ons.

It's like buying a burger and having to pay for every byte taken. In addition, if you want the cheese package, that cost you extra.
But if you don't want the pickles in the basic oackage, you still must pay for them. There is also a beacon package that would cost you more if you want that package. In the end, it's just a burger.

I think it's BS and a class action is needed to expose all these crazy hidden IT costs that are not explained up front.

They make you pay for a car with the features that you can not use because you do not want to pay for that part of the service, but the extended packages come with the features, so your forced to buy all the features then pay to use some of those features. That is insulting enough.

Car dealers are bad about exploiting IT services in auto sales. Toyota will insult too many buyers so they will end up one time customers with their story to tell their friends.

Sadly, I thought Toyota was a better company than that. Maybe their change in CEO is their problem. Hope they wake up.
