All my German fans have informed me that my translation is very wrong, but I still like to think it’s just an aggressive love song

You're correct that the "du hast" line is about love. It's actually taken from German wedding vows. But the key lyric after that part is "nein". So the song is actually a call-out to people (especially men) that aren't faithful to their vows.

I'm surprised even the Germans didn't mention that it's really NOT a love song. She asked him to marry her and he said nothing. Then it goes over wedding vows like "will you be faithful to me forever?" "Will you love me in sickness?" And he shouts "NO!"

I'm American but I took German in school and I specifically remember this song because my German teacher took such joy over the double meaning. Du hast and du hasst are pronounced the same but one means "have" and one means "hate." So you could say you have me, or you hate me. To my knowledge Rammstein never said which one it was and that it was done on purpose to point out how love and hate are interchangeable and how one can turn into the other

You...
You ask...
You ask me...
You ask me to whip,
You ask me to whip,
You ask me to whip, Jacques complies...

Just a suggestion 😁

So EPIC to see this!❤

"Du hast" sounds the same as "du hasst" (you hate) and the ambiguity is worked into the rest of the lyrics. It's not "just" a love song.

Du hast is actually a song that is a mystery to this day, it is either you have me (love) or you hate me (hatred). It is to do with wedding vows and the nein is like them saying no and the people go in are what the people want the person saying 'will you marry me'. I think this was a great version of the song and it was bloody brilliant 😂😂

You hate me to say, and you did not obey! Will you until death doth sever, be upright to her forever? Nein!

I don't think I'd call du hast a love song. 😅 Didn't he say he wouldn't be faithful to the woman he's about to merry?

Fun fact about "du hast", as well as being translated as "you have me" it can also be translated as " you hate me"
