AMM released their first recording, AMMusic 1966, on Elektra Records UK in 1966. It had some initial similarities to free jazz, due in part to Gare's saxophone. One critic has written, however, that the resemblance was rather slight: "the overall sound of the group, even in 1966, was so different, so idiosyncratic, that it's not at all surprising that both new jazz and contemporary classical audiences were baffled, if not horrified."

AMM is a British free improvisation group that was founded in London, England, in 1965. The group was initially composed of Keith Rowe on guitar, Lou Gare on saxophone, and Eddie Prévost on drums. The three men shared an interest in exploring music beyond the boundaries of conventional jazz, as in free jazz and free improvisation. AMM has never been popular but has been influential in improvised music.

A very important early influence on a young Syd Barrett. This album was a heavy influence on Syd's The Piper At The Gates of Dawn.

After years of listening to this and never understanding or enjoying it, I feel like I’m finally starting to get it

A true audio trip. Strange, and kind of beautiful, albeit in a VERY odd way.

As someone who enjoys "noise" music (Borbetomagus, Keiji Haino, Merzbow, Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music era, Macronympha, Emil Beaulieau and so many others to mention) this is relatable and enjoyable. Being aware of this genre's development made me realize the importance of this recording. It is helping me right now to study.

I've been led to listening to this by reading "A Very Irregular
This is just an hour of my life that I'll never get back.
Don't do it.

Reminds me a bit In Praise Of Learning, especially its more experimental parts.
And even more of Henry Cow in that the last track is simply "Silence".

I bought this after hearing John Peel play a track

"I can drink those men under the table. I can--" "Around his neck he has the most unbeaten...(train whistle)" Classic stuff. That track is my favorite, but I had fun listening to this whole album many years ago when I bought it. These guys were The Original Innovators. Almost everything important came after them, except Stockhausen I guess.

The summer of love in London was more '66 than '67. By the Spring, the city was awash in pure Sandoz LSD and people were taking it 500 ug at a time....

I see this, as some sort of horror, thriller soundtrack. Also, definitely you shouldn't check it, while you're tripping.

Eddie Prevost was actually, and perhaps continues to be, a very good percussionist.

Sounds like someone kicked an amateur jazz band down the stairs.
