Solve a rational equation by eliminating the denominators

👉 Learn how to solve proportions. Two ratios are said to be proportional when the two ratios are equal. Thus, proportion problems are problems involving the equality of two ratios. When given a proportion problem with an unknown, we usually cross-multiply the two ratios and then solve for the unknown using the applicable operations.

Alternatively, we can multiply the two ratios by the LCM of the denominators of the two ratios. This eliminates the denominators, we then solve the resulting equation accordingly to obtain the unknown variable.

It is very helpful to check your results by substituting them into the original equation to see if they are true. This also helps to identify the extraneous solutions. An extraneous solution is a solution which is obtained during the course of solving an equation but which does not hold true for the original equation.

Great explainations. Very personable and nice to students. Only hint: distracted by constantly correcting students, etc.

I would add 4/(x+1) to both sides to make it a proportional equation, then cross multiply.

How would you then solve this case: 0= -10, 000, 000+0, 05*(D)/1.05. Now How do we solve for D?

isn't the 5(x+1)-4(x-3) supposed to be all divided by (x-3)(x+1)???? same thing when you add 5/3+3/4. the answer isn't 29 rather the answer is 29/12.

(5x+5)-(4x-12):x^2-2x-3=0
x+17=0
x=-17

The answer supposed to match the equation right? But I replaced the variable x with 17 and the answer did not match to 0

I like the way you explain. It would still be better if you took time to write out the steps, so one could follow your written work instead of working on the same written expression .... Someone coming late to class cannot understand what you did.
