This report was posted by Reuters earlier this week, and although it doesn’t go into very much detail, it states that this new revamp of the Model 3 should go into production in the third quarter of 2023 at two Tesla factories: Giga-Shanghai and Fremont California. It also says that this redesign will be inspired by the last year’s redesign of the Model S. Although Tesla is still the top electric vehicle company in the world, they are still trying to do what all publicly traded companies do: make more money. The main goal of Project Highland includes some changes to the Model 3’s exterior and powertrain performance, but its main focus is to reduce production costs and improve its appeal, given that it was unveiled almost seven years ago in early 2016. According to the unnamed sources who leaked this new project, it aims to optimize the profitability of the Model 3 by decreasing the number of components and complexity in the interior while focusing on features that Tesla owners value, such as the display. If you don’t count the globally recognized industry features that apply to all electric vehicles such as quick acceleration, no fossil fuels, and fewer moving parts then the Tesla Model 3’s most important physical differentiating feature from its competitors is certainly the center touchscreen display. Let’s briefly go over these removed features and how it relates to the new Model 3 redesign: the removal of all ultrasonic sensors and removal of radar in support of the new Tesla Vision which only relies on software and cameras, the removal of passenger seat lumbar support, the removal of the center console tray, the removal of the previously included mobile connector which is now an optional purchase at checkout, and the removal of the cool original glass roof that turned orange and purple when water droplets were on it. With the potential tax credit in 2023 that requires an electric sedan to be under $55,000 to qualify, now’s the time for Tesla to make an already minimalist Model 3 even more simplified with better profit margins. Some things that we can expect Tesla to modify on this new 2023 Model 3 include the removal of the stalks on either side of the steering wheel, which the Model S has already adopted. Although I don’t think the Model 3 will get the yoke steering wheel like the Model S has, the Model 3 could follow the Texas-built Model Y get the same structural battery pack design to drastically reduce the number of parts necessary to make the car. But there’s not a ton Tesla can take away from the Model 3 because some people already think it’s not premium enough compared to its gasoline competitors in the same price range such as the BMW 5 series and Mercedes E class. But I do think if Tesla can somehow implement this new Model 3 re-design in 2023 it would not only bring a fresh new desire to potential buyers but it would also bring the price down to possibly qualify for the tax credit, which would make it an even bigger hit than it is today.

It's crazy that they think they need cost cutting measures still, when it's close to 50 grand already( originally 35k), does not come with floor mats or mobile charger and removed parking sensors, even some models supposedly downgraded from Michelin to Hankook tires. None of these cost savings have trickled down to consumers.

I’d love more sound deadening materials near the wheels, frunk, trunk, and underside. Granted the addition would add weight, but being as quiet as BMW or Lexus is a plus. Also? Apple/Android Carplay

Removing the indicator stork & having tough controls on steering wheel is stupid hardly cost much & virtually everyone hates touch controls on steering wheels just check out most reviews of the VW Id3 first thing most people say is we want physical buttons back.

Better noise insulation, proper HUD, ambient lighting, carbon wrapped motor/S, further improvement in build quality, trunk door change into proper liftback...

Gigacastings surely. My main hope is a total NVH overhaul and just making that aspect as good as it can be.

Your voice is so soothing that I may not even need to know the latest tesla news - I'll tune in for a dose of calm! Great video, Andy!

Would love to see the model 3 turn into a hatchback like how every other tesla model is

Changing to make efficiency gains in order to raise profit margins - or to present a fresh new look to compete with the alternative exciting designs ?

I have a 23’ M3P and the lack of ultrasonic sensors is a real bummer. After having them on my 22’ Model Y I really wish I had them in the 3. The steering wheel and turn signal stalk are the same as the 22’. I ordered a Mobile connector when I ordered the car and it over a month for the charger to arrive, I was told new customers are expected to Supercharge until it shows up.

Would like to see:

-projected HUD for driver OR actual gauge cluster from Model S and X
-heated AND ventilated seats
-power lift and close frunk

I’d be happy to remove glass roof, remove heated steering wheel and have optional ventilated seats.

I like my 2018 M3 LR as much today as the first day I got it, with the added features and even despite the removed ones -- except for the radar, I sort of miss that but let's see how TeslaVision goes. I recently had to replace my roof glass because of a large crack, and SADLY it no longer glows orange. I agree with you completely about liking that unusual display of color. I remember in the now-closed Tesla forum how people would complain about it and say it was weird, but once Tesla started using non-orange glass they all suddenly wished it had stayed. It used to be orange all the way back, then it was just the overhead piece (which is what I had). Now I have no orange, and it makes me sad.

By the way, about a month ago I replaced my tires with the new Pirelli P-Zero Elect tires and I have to say they are great. Quieter than what I had, and they ride very well. I wonder what experience you have had with tires.

VW tried touch only buttons on the steering wheel. Fortunately not for activating the direction indicator.
Removing the physical control for that and putting it in an significantly more difficult to operate place is a decision only comprehensible to a financial controller.
For the model S it's sensible, because they compete with BMW and which BMW driver ever uses direction indicators...

The sensors are definitely a discouragement. There are blind spots that sensors really come in handy for (especially tight garages). I think Tesla needs to make the M3 beefier like they did with the MS. The front & rear of the M3 can use a wider body. The one cast piece M3 would be amazing to have. Heads up display is something many Tesla owners have been asking for along with self presenting door handles. Still think the car is amazing!! ⚡️

The one feature I wish Tesla's had is Mercedes-Benz light strips styled totally configurable LED ambient lighting. I'm completely fine with the Simplicity of the Interior but it needs some color to add some emotion.

Hi Andy,
Recent delivery of my first Tesla and I have been a long-term subscriber, awaiting this delivery. I felt I was so far ahead of the game at delivery, I not only had my checklist but had my floor mats and drove the vehicle direct to the PPF shop, all do to being educated by your videos. I had just a general maintenance question:
What is considered good mileage for tire rotation?
Also, are there suggested mileage intervals that is suggested for maintenance service checks? at 10, 20 50K for example? I love the videos, very informative for all level Tesla owners!

Ultrasonic sensors being removed is a serious safety issue, unless they plan on adding a camera to the front bumper. This is ridiculous. There is a HUGE blind spot for the cameras there, so this is extremely unsafe. I don't care what they say. Removing all of this stuff while not reducing the cost of the car is just greedy. I understand they need to make a profit, but they are already making a ridiculous profit. I'm glad I got my Model 3 before they did this. You don't get get proper USB data ports in the new ones.

I received my Model 3 LR AWD in September 2018. I remember being a little bummed that I didn’t get a free die cast Model 3 they were giving out for a while. But I did get a free charging cable with adapters, a free center console tray and, best of all, a free upgrade on my battery, giving me the rare “Stealth” status. I know the new 3 will be great, but I want the orange roof like my current 3 when I have to buy another 3!
