The Active Volcano in Iceland; Snæfellsjökull

preview_player
Показать описание
One of Iceland's most unusual volcanoes can be found on a peninsula far to the north of Reykjavik. There, the hard to pronounce Snæfellsjökull volcano has been unusually active when you consider its distance from the nation's main volcanic chains. In the last 10,000 years, Snæfellsjökull has nearly erupted a dozen times, covering more than 230 square kilometers in a layer of lava during that timespan.

Just a piece of trivia. This is the volcano used by Jules Verne as the entrance to a pathway to the center of the earth in his novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth."

Epic roadtrip visiting the volcano. It’s so large it dominates the horizon for the entire time you drive toward it. It must of been quite a sight when it was erupting.

I swear I can type perfect Icelandic by having my cat walk across the keyboard

Probably my favourite volcano in Iceland, great video!

Thanks as always! Snaefellsjokull has such a wide range of eruptive products.
I wonder what will happen to Iceland in the far geological future, considering plate tectonics.

Thank you, Geo. Very informative as always plus I really appreciate bringing the lava types you mentioned into the video. This is context we can't find anywhere else.

GeologyHub, can you do a video on the 4.7M earthquake that was just felt in the northeastern US?

Another theory about the strato-volcanoes is that Iceland is underlain by a scrap of continental crust.

This volcano is not the one taken by Jules Verne's hero in his novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth"???

There is a mountain on the Isle of Man in the UK called Snaefell (2037ft)! It's NOT an active volcano however.

Waiting for a nice, short discussion about it in this channel :)

I'm experiencing deja vu here. I SWEAR he already mentioned this volcano!

So the name. Where Eyjafjallajökull means something as simple as Island Mountain Glacier, Snæfellsjökull means Snow Mountain Glacier. Kinda tautological I guess but still a simple enough name. :)
